Biography

Short Description

Juan Alcober (Spanish: Juan Alcober Figuera), known in English as John Alcober, was a Spanish Catholic priest of the Order of Preachers who served as a missionary in China and was executed for his faith in the mid-eighteenth century. He was born in 1694 in Granada, in southern Spain, when the Dominican order had a strong presence in Andalusia and regularly sent members to the Spanish overseas missions. He entered the Dominicans, completed the order’s usual formation in philosophy and theology, and was ordained a priest. Like other Spanish Dominicans of his generation, he volunteered for the East Asian missions, which typically meant first the Philippines and then, for some, the more hazardous China mission.

After a period in the Philippines he was sent to Fujian on the Chinese coast, a region where Dominicans of the Province of the Holy Rosary had worked since the seventeenth century. Christianity was legally restricted under the Qing dynasty, and foreign missionaries lived under constant threat of denunciation and arrest. Alcober spent many years in Fujian, acquiring enough of the language and local custom to minister to Chinese Christians: baptizing, hearing confessions, and celebrating Mass in hidden settings. Together with a small group of Spanish Dominican confreres and with Chinese catechists and lay leaders, he helped keep Catholic communities alive in towns and rural districts during a period of growing official suspicion of foreign religions.

In the mid-1740s Qing authorities intensified persecution of Christians in Fujian. Bishop Peter Sanz, the Dominican vicar apostolic, and several of his priests, including Alcober, were arrested, imprisoned, and interrogated. Sanz was beheaded in 1747. Alcober remained in custody in Fuzhou with Francis Serrano (who had been named to succeed Sanz as bishop but was never consecrated), Joachim Royo, and Francis Diaz. On 28 October 1748 the four priests were put to death by strangulation in prison. Contemporary missionary reports and later processes treated their deaths as execution for refusing to abandon the faith and their priestly ministry.

The Holy See recognized their martyrdom in the nineteenth century. Pope Leo XIII beatified Alcober and his Dominican companions in 1893. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized them among the one hundred and twenty Martyrs of China, a group that includes both foreign missionaries and Chinese Catholics killed between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. In the General Roman Calendar their collective memorial is 9 July. Alcober is remembered as one of the Spanish Dominican martyrs of Fujian, a figure whose life illustrates eighteenth-century Catholic mission in China and the cost of underground pastoral work under imperial prohibition.
