Biography

Short Description

Juan Bautista Đinh Văn Thành, known in Vietnamese as Gioan Baotixita Đinh Văn Thành, was a lay catechist and martyr of the Catholic Church in nineteenth-century Vietnam. He was born in 1796 in the village of Năng Cát in Nam Định province in the north of the country, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. In his earlier years he served as a soldier in the imperial army. He subsequently left military service and took up the work of a thầy giảng, or catechist, instructing the faithful and assisting priests in the pastoral care of Catholic communities in Tonkin. Catechists of this kind were indispensable in a Church that had grown through the earlier labors of Jesuit, Dominican, and Paris Foreign Missions Society missionaries, yet which increasingly had to operate under concealment as official hostility intensified.

From the 1830s Emperor Minh Mạng issued edicts that prohibited the practice of Christianity, ordered the expulsion of foreign missionaries, and imposed death or other severe penalties on those who would not recant, typically by trampling a crucifix. The court regarded the religion as a threat to Confucian social order and as a potential vehicle of European influence. In that climate, native catechists could move with somewhat greater freedom than foreign or even native priests, teaching doctrine, preparing catechumens, and holding communities together when clergy were in hiding or already imprisoned. Đinh Văn Thành continued this ministry until he was arrested in the course of the searches and denunciations that accompanied the persecution.

In prison he was subjected to the customary pressures and tortures intended to obtain apostasy. Like many of the Vietnamese martyrs he refused to deny the faith. On 8 November 1840 he was executed by beheading at Sơn Tây, toward the close of Minh Mạng’s reign. Contemporary and near-contemporary records of such lay martyrs typically concentrate on the circumstances of arrest, interrogation, and death rather than on domestic biography; surviving accounts do not furnish verified details of a spouse or children, and his personal family circumstances remain largely undocumented.

He is numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam, a group of bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople of Vietnamese, Spanish, and French origin put to death for the faith between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. They were canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988. The Church keeps their collective memory on 24 November. Devotion to these martyrs was preserved by Vietnamese Catholics through oral tradition and through the acts of the martyrs gathered by missionaries, and it later entered the formal processes of beatification of successive groups in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries before the joint canonization of 1988.
