Biography

Short Description

The designation Juan de la Cruz attached to Wikidata item Q111953153 cannot be matched with certainty to a single historically documented individual on the basis of standard printed hagiographies, martyrologies, or biographical dictionaries. The name is common in the Spanish-speaking Catholic world from the sixteenth century onward, and numerous priests, friars, missionaries, and laymen have borne it. In the absence of a corresponding Wikipedia article or other independently checkable source linked to this precise identifier, dates of birth and death, places of origin, burial, and ecclesiastical career remain unverified.

The best-known bearer of the name is the Spanish Carmelite Juan de Yepes y Álvarez, commonly called San Juan de la Cruz, a central figure of the Catholic Reformation and of Christian mysticism. Born in the mid-sixteenth century in Fontiveros in the kingdom of Castile, he entered the Carmelite order, studied at Salamanca, and joined Teresa of Ávila in the reform that produced the Discalced Carmelites. After imprisonment in Toledo he composed the poems and commentaries that include the Dark Night, the Spiritual Canticle, and the Living Flame of Love. He died in the late sixteenth century in Úbeda in Andalusia and was later beatified and canonized; his feast is observed in December. Whether Q111953153 refers to this Doctor of the Church cannot be confirmed from the information given.

Other historical persons named Juan de la Cruz include colonial-era missionaries in New Spain and the Philippines, a seventeenth-century Spanish painter and cartographer, and various local religious whose cults never received universal recognition. None of these figures can be securely identified with the requested Wikidata item. Consequently no feast day, list of patronages, or act of beatification or canonization can be attributed to this record.

Because the identity remains uncertain, statements about marriage, children, or a specific religious profession would be speculative. The subject was not Bishop of Rome and is not known to have held the office of patriarch or catholicos of an Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East see. The masculine given name Juan indicates a male subject, but even that inference is onomastic rather than a documentary identification of Q111953153.
