Biography

Short Description

Juan de Ribera was born in Seville in 1532, the illegitimate son of Pedro Afán de Ribera, a powerful Andalusian noble who later received the title Duke of Alcalá de los Gazules and served the Spanish Crown as viceroy in Catalonia and in Naples. Although born outside marriage, he was given a thorough education and directed toward an ecclesiastical career. He studied theology at the University of Salamanca and was ordained a priest. In 1562 Pope Pius IV appointed him Bishop of Badajoz. Still a young prelate, he set about applying the decrees of the Council of Trent in that diocese, insisting on clerical residence, catechesis, and reform of morals among clergy and laity.

In 1568 Pope Pius V named him Archbishop of Valencia, a metropolitan see he held until his death more than forty years later. Valencia in the later sixteenth century was a large, linguistically distinct kingdom of the Spanish monarchy, with a substantial Morisco population and a clergy still in need of Tridentine discipline. Ribera made pastoral visitation, diocesan synods, and the formation of priests central to his program. In 1583 he founded the Real Colegio Seminario del Corpus Christi in the city of Valencia, an ambitious seminary and collegiate church dedicated to the Eucharist. The institution, popularly known as El Patriarca, became the monument most closely associated with his name and still houses his tomb. He promoted eucharistic devotion, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, and the veneration of saints, and he supported the work of the Inquisition in his province.

King Philip III appointed him viceroy of Valencia in 1602, uniting in one person the highest civil and ecclesiastical authority in the kingdom. Ribera had long regarded the Morisco minority—baptized descendants of Muslims widely suspected of continuing Islamic practice—as a religious and political danger, and he had urged the Crown toward a drastic solution. In 1609 the king ordered the expulsion of the Moriscos from Valencia, the first and most thoroughly executed phase of a wider expulsion from Spain. Ribera supported and helped to implement the measure, which removed tens of thousands of people from the kingdom and transformed its demography and economy. Celebrated by many contemporaries as a defense of Catholic unity, the policy remains one of the most contested aspects of his historical legacy.

Ribera died in Valencia on 6 January 1611 and was buried in the college he had founded. A reputation for personal austerity, administrative vigor, and uncompromising orthodoxy sustained a cult after his death. Pope Pius VI beatified him in 1796. Pope John XXIII canonized him in 1960. His feast is kept on 6 January. Catholic tradition remembers him as a reforming archbishop of the Counter-Reformation; modern historical writing also situates him among the architects of the Morisco expulsion.
