Biography

Short Description

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, traditionally born in 1474 in Cuautitlán in the Valley of Mexico, belonged to the Chichimeca people living under Aztec rule. His Nahuatl name Cuauhtlatoatzin is customarily translated as Talking Eagle. A macehualli of modest means, he worked the land. After the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan in 1521, Franciscan friars began evangelizing the region. Juan Diego and his wife were among the early indigenous converts, receiving baptism and the names Juan Diego and María Lucía around the mid-1520s. They lived in the area of Tolpetlac, from which he walked regularly to the Franciscan church at Tlatelolco for instruction and the sacraments.

María Lucía died in 1529, leaving Juan Diego a widower. On 9 December 1531, while traveling to Mass, he encountered a radiant woman on Tepeyac Hill who addressed him in Nahuatl. She identified herself as the ever-virgin Mother of the true God and asked that a church be built on the hill so that she might show love, compassion, and protection to the people of the land. Juan Diego reported the request to Bishop Juan de Zumárraga, who received him courteously but remained skeptical and asked for further consideration.

The Virgin appeared again and, on 12 December, after Juan Diego had been delayed by the sudden illness of his uncle Juan Bernardino, she assured him that his uncle was already healed. She directed him to gather flowers from the normally barren, rocky hilltop. He found Castilian roses blooming out of season, collected them in his tilma (a cactus-fiber cloak), and presented them to the bishop. When the tilma was opened, the roses fell out and an image of the Virgin—now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe—was seen impressed upon the fabric. Juan Bernardino was cured and reported that the Lady had given her name as Santa María de Guadalupe. The bishop accepted the sign and ordered a chapel built at Tepeyac.

Juan Diego was permitted to live in a small dwelling beside the chapel and spent the remaining years of his life as its caretaker, receiving pilgrims and living in poverty, prayer, and penance. He died on 30 May 1548 and was buried in the chapel precincts. Devotion to the image and to its seer spread rapidly and became central to Mexican religious culture. A canonical inquiry was held in 1666. Although some modern historians have questioned whether the figure of Juan Diego is fully historical, the Catholic Church, after examining the testimonies, affirmed his existence. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 6 May 1990 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and canonized him on 31 July 2002 in Mexico City, presenting him as the first indigenous saint of the Americas.
