Biography

Short Description

Juan Grande Román was born in 1546 in Carmona, in the province of Seville in Andalusia, in Habsburg Spain. He came from a modest family connected with the cloth trade and received a conventional Christian upbringing. As a youth he went to Seville to learn a craft and worked among weavers and merchants. After his father’s death he returned to Carmona, then underwent a marked change of life: he disposed of property, adopted a penitential manner of living, and for a time withdrew into solitude, seeking to reshape his conduct according to the Gospels rather than to commercial success.

He later settled in Jerez de la Frontera, a busy Andalusian city with many poor, prisoners, and untreated sick. There he became known as Juan Pecador (John the Sinner), a name he used of himself to stress repentance rather than reputation. He collected alms, visited jails, and gathered abandoned patients. To give this work a stable form he founded a small hospital under the patronage of Our Lady of the Candelaria, where he and a few companions nursed those whom other houses would not receive. The hospital became the centre of his remaining life’s work.

In 1574 he sought affiliation with the Hospitaller family begun by Saint John of God, whose brothers were then spreading through Spain. He was received into the Order of Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God and took the religious name Juan Grande. As a professed brother he remained in Jerez, governing the Candelaria hospital according to the Hospitaller rule, training co-workers, and extending care during epidemics. Accounts of his ministry stress his insistence on treating every patient, including those with contagious disease, as a person made in the image of God, and his practical organization of beds, food, and nursing for the poorest of the city.

In 1600 plague struck Jerez. Juan Grande continued to receive and tend the infected in his hospital and in the town. He contracted the illness himself and died on 3 June 1600. Local devotion took root among the Hospitallers and the people of Jerez. The Catholic Church beatified him in 1853 under Pope Pius IX and canonized him in 1996 under Pope John Paul II. His liturgical memorial is 3 June. He is honored as patron of the Diocese of Jerez de la Frontera and of the Spanish Association of Blood Donors, and he remains a principal saint of the Hospitaller Order.
