Biography

Short Description

Saint Julia of Corsica, also called Julia of Carthage, is a Christian virgin martyr whose cult is attested in the western Mediterranean from the early Middle Ages. Nearly all that is told of her life comes from a Latin passio of uncertain date, generally placed between the seventh and ninth centuries, together with later local traditions in Corsica, Tuscany, and Lombardy, and a related Greek recension. Independent fifth-century evidence for the events narrated in the passio is lacking, and modern historians treat the story as largely legendary, though it may preserve the memory of a genuine martyr named Julia. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 22 May as a virgin martyr in Corsica. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her cult is of the pre-congregation kind, recognized through ancient liturgical veneration.

According to the traditional account, Julia was born of a distinguished Christian family in Carthage, in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis. When the Vandal king Genseric took the city in 439, she was among the captives sold into slavery. She was purchased by a merchant named Eusebius, often described as a Syrian, who employed her in his household. The passio stresses that she remained steadfast in Christian practice, giving herself to prayer and fasting while discharging the duties of a slave, and that her master, whatever his own beliefs, valued her service and did not forbid her observance. She is uniformly presented as a virgin and is not said to have married or to have had children.

Eusebius later took her on a trading voyage that put in at the northern coast of Corsica, at Cap Corse. The inhabitants were holding a pagan festival and offering sacrifice. Julia refused to take part. A local magistrate named Felix, offended by her refusal, tried to buy her from Eusebius in order to compel her apostasy; Eusebius would not sell her. While Eusebius lay in a drunken sleep, Felix had Julia seized, beaten, and crucified. Some recensions add that her breasts were cut off. Motifs typical of late antique and early medieval passion literature appear at her death: a dove is said to have issued from her mouth, and miraculous signs are reported to have accompanied the execution. Corsican tradition identifies the village of Nonza, on Cap Corse, as the place of martyrdom and associates a local spring and church with the saint.

Monks from the nearby island of Gorgona in the Tuscan Archipelago were, according to the legend, supernaturally informed of the martyrdom, recovered Julia’s body, and buried it on Gorgona. In 762 the Lombard king Desiderius and queen Ansa had the relics translated to Brescia and enshrined in the monastery of San Salvatore, later known as Santa Giulia, which Ansa had founded. From Brescia the cult spread; portions of the relics were later claimed by Livorno and by Nonza. Julia and Saint Devota are the principal patron saints of Corsica, a dignity given formal recognition by the Holy See in the early nineteenth century (Julia in 1809). She is also venerated as patron of Livorno and of Nonza and is invoked by those who have suffered torture. Because the passio cannot be corroborated by contemporary records, the year of her death is not historically established. Dates such as 439, and in some later notices 616 or 762, reflect the Vandal capture of Carthage or the chronology of relic translations rather than a documented date of martyrdom.
