Biography

Short Description

The single given name Julian (Latin Iulianus; Greek Ioulianos) is attached to many distinct historical and legendary figures in late antique, medieval, and early modern Christian sources. No Wikidata identifier, Wikipedia article, place-name, epithet, feast date, or other disambiguator was supplied with this query. In the absence of that information it is not possible to verify which person is intended, and therefore no birth year, death year, places, order, marital status, patronage, or canonization data can be assigned without guessing. Substituting an office-taking date or a date belonging to a different Julian would violate basic historical method.

In Eastern hagiography the name is borne by several martyrs of the Roman persecutions. One frequently cited is Julian of Antioch (also associated with Anazarbus in Cilicia), remembered as a victim of the Diocletianic persecution in the early fourth century; later passiones describe drowning or other torments and place his cult in Syria and Cilicia, but they do not preserve a verifiable birth year or a single agreed burial site. Other Eastern calendars commemorate additional Julians of Egypt, of Emesa, and of various Palestinian and Anatolian localities, often with conflicting dates and almost no independent documentary control. None of these dossiers can be treated as the default identity of an unspecified “Julian.”

In the Latin West the most widely diffused legendary figure is Julian the Hospitaller (sometimes conflated with Julian of Brioude or other local saints), whose medieval vitae present a nobleman who accidentally killed his parents, then devoted himself to ferrying travellers and sheltering the poor. The story is literary rather than archival; birth and death years, a real city of origin, and a historical spouse or children are not recoverable from reliable sources. Separate historical bishops include Julian of Le Mans, venerated as an early missionary in Gaul, and Julian of Toledo, a seventh-century archbishop and theological writer in Visigothic Spain. Their careers belong to different centuries and kingdoms; neither was Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see in the sense required here, and neither has a securely documented natal year in the surviving records.

A further, well-known bearer of the name is Julian of Norwich, an English anchoress and mystical writer of the later fourteenth century, whose Revelations of Divine Love is a major vernacular theological text. Despite the masculine form of the name, this Julian was a woman; her exact birth year, parentage, and burial place remain uncertain, and she is not a pope, patriarch, or member of a named religious order in the conventional sense. Still another Julian is the Roman emperor Flavius Claudius Julianus (often called Julian the Apostate), a fourth-century ruler and pagan restorer who is a subject of secular history rather than Christian hagiography. Conflating any of these people would produce a false composite biography.

Because the intended subject cannot be identified from the information given, every structured field is left empty and the list of patronages is empty. A usable hagiographical notice would require at least a place (for example Antioch, Le Mans, Toledo, Cuenca, or Norwich), an epithet (the Hospitaller, of Anazarbus), a tradition (Latin, Byzantine, Coptic), or a catalogue reference. Until that is supplied, caution requires recording the ambiguity rather than inventing a life.
