Biography

Short Description

Saints Juliana and Semproniana, known in Catalan as Les Santes, are a pair of Christian martyrs of the late Roman period whose cult is centered in Catalonia, especially in the city of Mataró. According to the hagiographical tradition that grew up around Saint Cucuphas (Sant Cugat), they lived in the early fourth century in the hinterland of Barcino (Barcelona), in the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis. Cucuphas, remembered as a native of Scillium in North Africa who evangelized the Barcelona region, was put to death at Castrum Octavianum—later the site of the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès—during the Great Persecution under Diocletian and Maximian, an event traditionally placed in 304. Juliana and Semproniana are presented as devout Christian women, sometimes called his disciples, who undertook to recover and bury his body after the execution.

The legend holds that their charitable act was discovered by the imperial authorities. Arrested and pressed to abandon the Christian faith, they refused and were themselves condemned and killed, thus becoming martyrs in their own right. No contemporary fourth-century document names them; their story is preserved in later passiones and in the liturgical and civic memory of Catalonia. Details such as their exact ages, family background, place of birth, and the precise manner of their execution are not historically verified. Later piety often classed them among the virgin martyrs, but that characterization belongs to hagiographical convention rather than to independent evidence. Their Roman names, Juliana and Semproniana, are consistent with the onomastics of the period.

From the Middle Ages onward the two saints were especially venerated in Mataró, on the Maresme coast. Tradition maintains that relics identified as theirs came to be kept in the parish church, today the Basilica of Santa Maria de Mataró, where they remain the focus of local devotion. Juliana and Semproniana are the principal patron saints of Mataró. The city’s festa major, called Les Santes, is observed around 27 July, which is their liturgical feast day in the local calendar. The celebration unites religious rites with popular festivities and has been a defining element of Mataró’s civic identity for centuries. In 1848 the local priest and composer Manuel Blanch wrote the Missa de les Santes, a polyphonic Mass that became closely associated with the feast and with Catalan sacred music of the nineteenth century.

The memory of Juliana and Semproniana is also bound to the monastic history of Sant Cugat del Vallès, where the martyrdom of Cucuphas was localized and where the women’s original burial was believed to have taken place before any later translation of relics. They were never the object of a formal papal canonization of the kind practiced in later centuries; their sainthood rests on ancient local cult, as is typical of many early martyrs. In art they appear as two young women, frequently with the martyr’s palm, and sometimes shown burying the body of Saint Cucuphas. Beyond their patronage of Mataró and their place in the Cucuphas cycle, little else can be established with confidence. The historical kernel, if any, is that of two otherwise unknown Christians of the Barcelona region whose names and association with the burial of a martyr were preserved in medieval tradition and became, in time, central to the religious life of Mataró.
