Biography

Short Description

Julius and Aaron were Romano-British Christian martyrs whose names, together with that of Saint Alban of Verulamium, are the only ones of British martyrs preserved in the earliest native historical literature. The sixth-century cleric Gildas, in De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae, praised God for having kindled in Britain the bright lamps of holy martyrs, among whom he named Alban of Verulamium and Aaron and Julius, citizens of the City of the Legions, as well as many others of both sexes who suffered in various places. Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written in the early eighth century, repeated this testimony and associated their passion with the same era as Alban's. Later tradition identified that era with the Great Persecution of the emperor Diocletian, and their deaths have therefore been conventionally dated to about 304, although neither Gildas nor Bede supplies a precise year.

The City of the Legions (urbs legionum) mentioned by Gildas has been identified by the great majority of historians with Isca Augusta, the fortress of the Second Augustan Legion, known in Welsh as Caerleon, in present-day Monmouthshire. A minority of scholars have suggested Chester or other legionary centres, but medieval Welsh and Norman writers consistently located the cult at Caerleon. Geoffrey of Monmouth in the twelfth century stated that Julius and Aaron were martyred at Caerleon in the time of Diocletian and that churches were built there in their honour. Gerald of Wales, writing later in the same century, described two churches at Caerleon, one dedicated to Julius and the other to Aaron, the latter associated with a community of canons. These notices show that a local cult was firmly established by the high Middle Ages, even though no contemporary passion, inscription, or martyr-act survives.

Almost nothing can be recovered of their personal lives. It is not known whether they were clergy or laymen, soldiers or civilians, or of what age or family they were. The combination of a Roman name, Julius, with the biblical name Aaron has led some modern commentators to wonder whether one of them may have had Jewish ancestry or whether the name Aaron was chosen for its scriptural resonance; such ideas remain speculative. No reliable information exists concerning spouses, children, or membership in any religious order. Their historical importance rests on their being among the very few named witnesses to Christianity in Roman Britain before the fourth-century peace of the Church.

Their feast day is kept on 1 July in the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates them as having suffered at Caerleon in the persecution of Diocletian. They were honoured as saints from an early date, long before the later medieval procedures of papal canonization and beatification, and no individual pontiff is recorded as having formally canonized them. A religious house at Caerleon was later associated with their memory. After the Reformation the public cult diminished, yet they have continued to be remembered in Catholic, Anglican, and local Welsh tradition as among the protomartyrs of Britain. The extreme poverty of the early evidence requires that any account of Julius and Aaron remain cautious: beyond their names, their connection with the legionary city, and their martyrdom for the Christian faith, later narrative details belong to medieval elaboration rather than to verifiable contemporary record.
