Biography

Short Description

Saint Julius of Novara, also known as Julius of Orta (Italian: San Giulio di Orta or San Giulio di Novara), was a Christian missionary priest of the late fourth century whose cult is centered on Isola San Giulio in Lake Orta, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary documents. The principal narrative of his career is a later hagiographical vita, generally regarded by historians as legendary in its details, which presents Julius and his brother Julian as Greek-born clergy who evangelized the Novarese countryside and the shores of Lake Orta. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Julius as a priest at Novara on 31 January. Tradition places his death in 401, a date that aligns with the legendary association of the brothers with the reign of Emperor Theodosius I but that cannot be independently verified from late-antique records.

According to the received legend, Julius and Julian were natives of the island of Aegina. After ordination—accounts vary as to whether they were ordained by a bishop of northern Italy or arrived already in orders—they were charged, in some versions by Theodosius himself, with destroying pagan sanctuaries and raising Christian churches in the territory of Novara. The vita attributes to them the foundation of a great number of churches, conventionally given as ninety-nine, a figure that belongs to pious topos rather than archival record. Julian is said to have died first, at Gozzano on the eastern shore of Lake Orta, where a church (later the basilica of San Giuliano) marked his tomb. Julius then undertook to complete their work by building a hundredth church on the island in the lake.

The island, later named Isola San Giulio, was described in the legend as a haunt of serpents or dragons and as a last refuge of pagan cult. Unable to find a boat, Julius is said to have spread his cloak upon the water and sailed across to the island; the creatures fled at his approach, and he built an oratory dedicated to the Twelve Apostles. He remained there until his death and was buried in the church he had founded. Whatever the historical kernel of this story, an early Christian presence on the island is archaeologically and liturgically plausible, and the present Basilica of San Giulio, a Romanesque rebuilding on older foundations, has long claimed to house his relics. A medieval pulpit and later artistic cycles on the island and in the surrounding towns retell the legend of the cloak and the serpents.

Devotion to Julius is local but continuous. Orta San Giulio takes its name from him, and he is venerated as patron of the town and of the island. The Sacro Monte di Orta, a later Counter-Reformation sacred mountain dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, overlooks the same lake and island, linking the early missionary cult to subsequent Catholic piety in the region. Julius was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the modern type; his status as a saint rests on ancient cult, later recognized in the martyrology. No reliable evidence records a wife or children, nor membership in a later religious order; he is remembered simply as a priest and missionary. Historical caution requires that the Greek origin, the imperial commission, the hundred churches, and the cloak-miracle be treated as legend, while the existence of an early priestly cult at Isola San Giulio in the late antique diocese of Novara remains the most secure element of his memory.
