Biography

Short Description

Giustino Maria Russolillo, known in English as Justin Russolillo, was born on 18 January 1891 in Pianura, then a town in the province of Naples in southern Italy. He grew up in a large and devout Catholic family and from childhood expressed a desire for the priesthood together with a concern for other young people who might be called to religious life but lacked support. He studied in the seminary of the Diocese of Pozzuoli and was ordained a priest on 20 September 1913. From the beginning of his ministry he devoted himself to pastoral work among the poor of Pianura and to the discernment and cultivation of vocations.

In 1920 he founded the Society of Divine Vocations, a religious congregation of men commonly called the Vocationist Fathers, whose purpose was to seek out, form, and assist those called to the priesthood and consecrated life, especially candidates from humble backgrounds. The following year he established a corresponding congregation of women, the Vocationist Sisters. He later inspired a secular institute, the Apostles of Universal Sanctification. For decades he served as parish priest of San Giorgio Martire in Pianura while governing the new institutes, which grew slowly amid poverty and the need to obtain ecclesiastical approval.

Russolillo’s spirituality was markedly Trinitarian. He taught that every baptized person is called to holiness and that fostering vocations was a work of the whole Church. He emphasized Eucharistic devotion, consecration to the Trinity, and a Marian piety centered on Mary as mother and model of vocation. He wrote numerous spiritual notes, rules, and reflections on vocational discernment. His personal life was austere; contemporaries described him as a humble pastor who combined administrative burdens with long hours of prayer and the confessional.

He died in Pianura on 2 August 1955. Devotion to him persisted in the Vocationist family and in the local church. He was beatified on 7 May 2011 in a ceremony held in Pianura, and Pope Francis canonized him on 15 May 2022 in Saint Peter’s Square. His liturgical feast is observed on 2 August. The congregations he founded continue to work in several countries in the service of vocations and of what he called universal sanctification.
