Biography

Short Description

Saint Justinian of Ramsey Island, known in Welsh as Stinan or Iestin and in Latin as Justinianus, was a sixth-century hermit associated with the early Christian settlement of Menevia, later St Davids, in Pembrokeshire in southwest Wales. Medieval tradition holds that he was of noble Breton parentage and that he left Armorica to pursue a stricter religious life across the Channel. He established himself as a hermit on Ramsey Island, called Ynys Dewi in Welsh, which lies off the western Pembrokeshire coast and is separated from the mainland by the tidal race of Ramsey Sound. The earliest substantial literary notice of him is not contemporary: Rhygyfarch’s Life of Saint David, composed in the late eleventh century, presents Justinian as the confessor and spiritual adviser of Saint David, thereby placing him within the circle of the principal saint of the region.

Later medieval hagiography, compiled well after the events it describes, supplies the story of his death. According to these accounts, three of Justinian’s own servants or hired workmen, resentful of his austerity or stirred up by the devil, attacked him on the island and beheaded him. The legend then follows a pattern familiar in Celtic and other early medieval martyr stories: Justinian is portrayed as a cephalophore whose body took up the severed head and crossed the sound to the mainland. A spring of water with healing properties was said to have appeared where he was struck down. The murderers were believed to have been visited with disease or other punishment. None of these narrative details can be confirmed from sixth-century evidence; they belong to the stock of local legend that grew around an otherwise obscure holy man.

Devotion to Justinian became fixed on the Pembrokeshire coast. The landing place now called St Justinian’s, or Porthstinian, takes its name from him and remains the departure point for boats to Ramsey Island. A chapel dedicated to the saint, rebuilt in the early sixteenth century on an older sacred site and now ruined, stands above the harbour. Traditional compilers of saints’ lives, including Alban Butler, state that Justinian’s body was carried to the cathedral church at St Davids and honourably buried there. Relics attributed to him were reported at St Davids in the Middle Ages, when Bishop Bernard and others promoted the cults of local saints. Gerald of Wales, writing in the late twelfth century, noted Ramsey Island as a place associated with holy men and burials. Justinian’s feast is kept on 5 December in Welsh and other liturgical calendars.

Historically, almost nothing about Justinian can be established with certainty. No reliable source records the year of his birth or of his death, the name of his birthplace beyond the general attribution to Brittany, or any family except the claim of noble rank. He is not known to have been a bishop, abbot of a named monastery, or member of a later religious order; the sources remember him as a hermit and, in the legend, as a martyr. His memory survives in the place-name St Justinian’s, in the ruined chapel, in the dedication of the island hermitage, and in the liturgical commemoration on 5 December. He should not be confused with the sixth-century Byzantine emperor Justinian I or with other saints who bore the same name.
