Biography

Short Description

Justus of Beauvais, known in French as Saint Just de Beauvais, is venerated in the Catholic Church as a child martyr of late third-century Gaul. Traditional hagiography places his birth at Auxerre about 278 and his death about 287, when he was said to be nine years old. No contemporary Roman or ecclesiastical document confirms these dates or even his historical existence; the story is preserved in later medieval passiones and in martyrological notices. He belongs to a group of youthful Gallic martyrs whose legends were written or elaborated in the early Middle Ages, and he is classed among the cephalophores, saints who in legend carry their own severed heads.

According to the received legend, Justus was the son of Christian parents at Auxerre. When he was about nine, he accompanied his father on a journey toward Amiens. On the way they were halted by soldiers hunting for Christians. The official named in the story is Rictius Varus, or Rictiovarus, a persecutor who figures in a whole cycle of northern French martyr legends and who is not attested as a historical magistrate. Questioned about his religion, the boy declared himself a Christian. He was then beheaded. Tradition locates the execution at or near the place later called Saint-Just-en-Chaussée, on the Roman road in the Beauvaisis, in what is now the department of Oise.

The legend continues that after the beheading Justus picked up his head and spoke, a motif shared with other cephalophoric saints of Gaul such as Denis of Paris. In some versions his father recovered the body and buried it at the site of the martyrdom. A cult developed around the tomb, and the settlement took the saint's name. Relics attributed to Justus were later honoured at Beauvais and were also claimed by churches elsewhere, including Paris and Winchester Cathedral in England. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 18 October as a nine-year-old martyr who suffered at Beauvais under the judge Rictiovarus during the persecution associated with Diocletian, although the traditional year 287 would fall before the Great Persecution of 303 and the figure of Rictiovarus itself is considered legendary by modern historians.

Justus was a child and therefore belonged to no religious order, did not marry, and had no children. He held no episcopal or patriarchal office and was never pope. Like other martyrs of the pre-Constantinian era he was venerated by popular cult and local liturgical commemoration rather than by a formal papal canonization of the kind introduced in the later Middle Ages. His patronage is not extensively documented beyond his association with the Beauvais region and the town that bears his name. Historians treat the Acts as unhistorical in their present form, while allowing that a martyr named Justus may have been honoured in Picardy from an early date and that his legend absorbed common literary themes of child confession, cephalophory, and the stock persecutor Rictiovarus.
