Biography

Short Description

Justus of Urgell, known in Latin as Justus Urgellensis and in Catalan as Just d'Urgell, was a Catholic bishop and biblical commentator in the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania during the first half of the sixth century. He held the see of Urgell, an ancient diocese in the eastern Pyrenees in the region that is now Catalonia. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, education, or early career. The principal near-contemporary notice of his life is the brief entry by Isidore of Seville in De viris illustribus. Isidore records that Justus was one of four brothers who all became bishops: Justus himself at Urgell, Nebridius at Egara (present-day Terrassa), Elpidius at Huesca, and Justinian at Valencia. That family of bishops is a striking but isolated biographical fact; no reliable source preserves the names of their parents, their social rank, or a specific place of origin.

The documentary anchors for his episcopate are the acts of church councils. He subscribed as bishop of Urgell to the Second Council of Toledo in 527, which dealt with ecclesiastical discipline and the organization of the Catholic Church under Arian Visigothic rule. He was still in office nearly two decades later and took part in the Council of Lérida (Lleida) in 546, which issued canons on clerical conduct, church property, and related disciplinary questions. These subscriptions fix the known chronological bounds of his public activity. He lived in a period when the Catholic episcopate of Hispania functioned under Arian Visigothic kings, a situation that changed only with the conversion of King Reccared late in the century, after Justus's time.

Justus's principal surviving work is a Latin commentary on the Song of Songs, dedicated to a deacon named Sergius. Isidore describes it as an exposition of the Canticle according to a mystical sense. The treatise stands in the allegorical tradition of Christian exegesis, reading the biblical love poetry as a figure of the union of Christ and the Church. It is one of the few substantial exegetical texts attributable to a sixth-century Spanish author and therefore occupies a place in the history of Latin biblical interpretation in the Iberian Peninsula. No other writings by Justus are securely identified, although the dedication itself takes epistolary form.

The precise year and place of his death are not recorded. Because he was present at Lérida in 546, he cannot have died before that date; later tradition has often placed his death in the mid-sixth century. He has been venerated as a saint, with a feast observed on 28 May, and his cult has been associated with the diocese of Urgell. Like many early medieval bishops he was recognized by local and liturgical tradition rather than by a later-style papal canonization. His burial place is unknown. Beyond Isidore's notice, the conciliar lists, and the commentary on the Song of Songs, the historical record is silent. Claims about a birth year, a monastic profession, marriage or children, or specific patronages are not supported by surviving sources.
