Biography

Short Description

Justus of Vienne was a bishop of the ancient see of Vienne in the late fourth century. Vienne, on the Rhône in what is now southeastern France, was a major Gallo-Roman city and the centre of the province of Viennensis. Its Christian community was already old by his day and later local tradition traced the see back to apostolic times, though that claim cannot be verified from contemporary evidence. Almost nothing is known of Justus’s birth, family, education, or career before he appears as bishop. He belongs to the large group of late antique Gallic prelates whose names survive in episcopal catalogues, conciliar notices, and later martyrologies, but for whom no contemporary biography or corpus of letters was preserved.

He is generally identified as the bishop of Vienne associated with the Council of Valence, a Gallic synod held in 374 in the neighbouring city of Valence. That gathering issued disciplinary canons on penance, lapsed clergy, and church order at a time when the churches of Gaul were consolidating Nicene orthodoxy and episcopal authority under the Western emperors Valentinian I and Gratian. Medieval catalogues of the bishops of Vienne place Justus after Saint Verus and before a successor named Martin, and they often assign his episcopate roughly to the years 374–381. Those dates come from later lists rather than from documents written in his lifetime, and other traditions give his death around the year 400. No surviving fourth-century source records the day or even the certain year of his death. Unlike his more famous namesake Justus of Lyon, who resigned his see and died as a hermit in Egypt, Justus of Vienne is not said to have abandoned his church; the local tradition is that he remained bishop at Vienne until he died and was buried there.

Memory of him was kept above all in his own city. In the ninth century Ado, archbishop of Vienne, included Justus among the holy bishops of the see in his chronicle and martyrology. Medieval martyrologies commemorate him at Vienne, with the feast given in different witnesses as 2 May or 6 May; the latter date is frequently linked to his depositio, the anniversary of burial. No ancient vita, passion, or collection of miracles has come down, and no writings can be attributed to him. He was honoured as a holy bishop and confessor, not as a martyr. Because he lived many centuries before the medieval papacy regularized canonization, his cult is of the pre-congregation type: recognition by ancient local veneration rather than by a papal bull.

The wider setting of his life is the Christianization of the Rhône valley in the generations after Constantine. Vienne was a Roman colony and an administrative capital; in the fourth century its bishop was becoming a central civic as well as religious figure, while public pagan cult was in decline. The church of Vienne would later be associated with better-documented figures such as Mamertus in the fifth century and Avitus in the sixth. Justus himself, however, remains historically obscure. Modern scholarship accepts a fourth-century bishop of Vienne of this name, connected with the period of the Council of Valence and remembered in the medieval liturgy of his city, while treating the precise years of his birth and death, his place of origin, and any details of his pastoral work as unknown.
