Biography

Short Description

Juvenal of Jerusalem was a fifth-century bishop of the holy city who became its first patriarch, holding the see from about 422 until his death in 458. Almost nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, or early career; he enters the historical record as successor to Bishop Praylius. At that time Jerusalem enjoyed unique prestige as the site of the Passion and Resurrection, and its bishop had long claimed a special honorary rank, yet the see remained canonically under the metropolitan of Caesarea in Palaestina and within the wider orbit of the Patriarchate of Antioch. Juvenal made the elevation of Jerusalem the central project of his episcopate, seeking first metropolitan rights over the Palestinian provinces and then full patriarchal status.

At the First Council of Ephesus in 431 he supported Cyril of Alexandria against Nestorius of Constantinople. During the council he also advanced far-reaching jurisdictional claims over Palestine, Phoenicia, and Arabia, which the representatives of Antioch resisted. Ephesus did not resolve Jerusalem’s rank, but it established Juvenal as a determined advocate of his see. In 449 he sat at the Second Council of Ephesus, later condemned in Chalcedonian tradition as the Robber Council. There he aligned with Dioscorus of Alexandria, backed the restoration of Eutyches, and joined in the deposition of Flavian of Constantinople, thus standing with the miaphysite party against the two-nature Christology associated with Pope Leo I.

At the Council of Chalcedon in 451 Juvenal reversed course. He accepted Leo’s Tome and the council’s definition of Christ as one person in two natures, divine and human. In exchange the council recognized Jerusalem as a patriarchate with authority over the three provinces of Palestine (Palaestina Prima, Secunda, and Tertia), territory taken from Antioch. The settlement fulfilled Juvenal’s long campaign, but it outraged many Palestinian monks who regarded Chalcedon as a betrayal of Cyril and of Juvenal’s own earlier position. A revolt followed. The monk Theodosius, aided by Empress Aelia Eudocia, then living in the Holy Land, expelled Juvenal and occupied the see. Juvenal fled to Constantinople. Imperial power under Marcian and Pulcheria restored him in 453 by military force; the suppression involved violence against monastic opponents. Eudocia later accepted Chalcedon after appeals from Pope Leo and the stylite Simeon.

Juvenal spent his remaining years securing the new patriarchate. He died in 458 and was succeeded by Anastasius I of Jerusalem. The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint, with commemoration on 2 July. His career is the principal episode in Jerusalem’s rise from a suffragan bishopric to a patriarchate, and it also illustrates the local bitterness that followed Chalcedon in Palestine. Beyond the conciliar acts and the well-attested struggle over his see, the personal details of his life remain obscure.
