Biography

Short Description

Saint Juvenal (Italian: San Giovenale) was a bishop of Narni in Umbria, in central Italy, honoured as a confessor in the Roman Martyrology on 3 May. He is placed in the fourth century. Later notices assign his death to 3 May in 369, 376, or 377, but those years rest on late tradition rather than on contemporary records and cannot be treated as established fact. No reliable source gives the year or place of his birth. A legendary Life composed long after the period it describes claimed that he was a native of Africa, that he had practised medicine, and that Pope Damasus I ordained him and sent him to Narni. Critical hagiographers have long regarded that narrative as unhistorical.

What can be affirmed with more confidence is that an early episcopal cult at Narni was attached to a bishop named Juvenal. Narni, a town on the Via Flaminia, preserved his memory as that of its bishop and heavenly patron. He is commonly described as the first bishop of the see, or as the earliest bishop around whom the diocese later constructed its foundation story. No letters of his survive, and he is not known to have taken part in any recorded council, so the character of his pastoral work, the length of his tenure, and his position in the doctrinal conflicts of the fourth century remain unknown.

Local tradition holds that he died at Narni and was buried there. His relics have been enshrined in the cathedral of the city, the Concattedrale di San Giovenale, which bears his name. The Roman Martyrology’s notice is brief: it locates him at Narni in Umbria and styles him bishop and confessor. That liturgical entry, rather than any contemporary biography, is the principal ancient witness to his cult. Devotion to him spread in Umbria; the church of San Giovenale at Orvieto, among the oldest churches of that city, attests to his wider regional honour. The people of Narni have regarded him as their chief patron saint.

Miracle stories accumulated in the Middle Ages, including accounts of healings and of power over demons, but they cannot be verified and belong to the legendary layer of his dossier. He was not canonized by a formal papal process of the later medieval type; his status as a saint rests on immemorial public cult, later received into the general Roman martyrology. There is no trustworthy evidence that he belonged to a religious order, that he married, or that he had children. Other churchmen have borne the same name, notably Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem in the fifth century, and the Oratorian bishop Juvenal Ancina in the early modern period; the present account concerns only the bishop of Narni.
