Biography

Short Description

Juvenaly of Alaska (Russian: Yuvenaly Alyaskinsky) was a Russian Orthodox hieromonk and missionary venerated as a hieromartyr and as one of the protomartyrs of the Orthodox Church in the New World. He was born in 1761 in Ekaterinburg, in the Ural region of the Russian Empire. In secular life he was known as Yakov Govorukhin (Jacob Govorukhin) and trained and worked as a mining engineer. In 1791 he entered the monastery of Valaam on Lake Ladoga, then a leading center of Russian monasticism. There he was tonsured a monk with the name Juvenaly and was ordained deacon and priest, becoming a hieromonk. His monastic life at Valaam was brief: within two years he was chosen for a newly organized mission to Russian America.

In 1793 the Russian Orthodox Church, with imperial backing and at the urging of the Russian-American Company, assembled a missionary party to evangelize the indigenous peoples of Alaska. Hieromonk Juvenaly was one of about ten monks, drawn mainly from Valaam and Konevets, sent under Archimandrite Joasaph Bolotov. After an overland crossing of Siberia and a sea voyage from Okhotsk, the group reached Kodiak Island in September 1794. They found a recently established Russian trading post and a large Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) population. The missionaries baptized, taught, and sought to check the abuses of some of the promyshlenniki, the Russian fur hunters. Contemporary reports credit the Kodiak mission with thousands of baptisms in its first years. Among Juvenaly’s companions was the monk Herman, later glorified as Saint Herman of Alaska.

Juvenaly was assigned to carry the mission from Kodiak onto the Alaskan mainland. In 1795 he traveled to the Kenai Peninsula and preached among the Dena’ina, then continued farther to the west. Traditional hagiography holds that he reached the Bering Sea coast and was killed in 1796 by Yup’ik people near Quinahak (Quinhagak), after baptizing many and after conflict over local marriage customs or the conversion of a woman connected with a village leader. A purported diary of Juvenaly that circulated in the nineteenth century and shaped many later retellings was subsequently shown to be a forgery by Ivan Petroff. Modern historians therefore treat the precise place and circumstances of his death as uncertain; some research has pointed to a killing near Lake Iliamna rather than on the Kuskokwim or Bering coast. What is not seriously disputed is that he disappeared while traveling as a missionary on the mainland in the mid-1790s and was believed by his contemporaries to have been slain. No relics of certain identification are known, and the site of his burial has not been established.

The Orthodox Church came to regard Juvenaly as a hieromartyr, the first Orthodox cleric to die for the faith in America. He is often commemorated together with the Aleut martyr Peter. In 1980 the Orthodox Church in America formally glorified Hieromonk Juvenaly and Peter the Aleut as the first martyrs of America. His principal feast days in the Orthodox calendar are 2 July and 24 September; he is also remembered in the Synaxis of All Saints of Alaska on 12 December and in the Synaxis of the Saints of North America. Because so much of the later narrative depends on a forged diary and on oral tradition recorded long after the events, a careful account must distinguish the well-attested outline of his life—Ural birth, Valaam monasticism, the 1794 Kodiak mission, and disappearance on the mainland—from the unconfirmed details of his last journey and death.
