Biography

Short Description

Blessed Kamen Vitchev was born Peter Vitchev on 23 May 1893 in the village of Srem, in what is now Yambol Province in Bulgaria. His family belonged to the Bulgarian Greek Catholic Church, a small Eastern Catholic community that follows the Byzantine liturgy while remaining in communion with Rome. Drawn to religious life, he entered the Congregation of the Augustinians of the Assumption, known as the Assumptionists, in 1910 and received the religious name Kamen, the Bulgarian word for stone, echoing his baptismal name Peter. He completed studies in philosophy and theology in the Near East and in Western Europe and was ordained a priest of the Byzantine rite on 22 December 1921.

After ordination, Vitchev gave himself to the educational apostolate of his congregation in Bulgaria. He taught philosophy, dogmatic theology, and Church history in Assumptionist schools and seminaries, especially in Plovdiv, a principal center of Bulgarian Eastern Catholicism. He was known as a learned and conscientious professor who formed seminarians and students at a time when Catholics were a small minority, often regarded with suspicion by Orthodox and secular authorities alike. His work combined scholarship with the ordinary pastoral duties of an Eastern-rite priest.

The communist takeover in Bulgaria after the Second World War brought a systematic campaign against the Catholic Church. Religious houses and schools were closed or seized, foreign missionaries were expelled, and native clergy were denounced as agents of the Vatican and of Western powers. Vitchev remained in the country and continued his ministry as long as circumstances allowed. In 1952 the regime staged a show trial of Catholic priests. He was arrested together with his fellow Assumptionists Pavel Djidjov and Josaphat Chichkov and was charged with espionage, conspiracy, and anti-state activity. The same wave of repression also led to the condemnation of Bishop Eugene Bossilkov of Nicopolis.

Sentenced to death, Kamen Vitchev was executed by firing squad in Sofia on the night of 11 November 1952, together with Djidjov and Chichkov. The authorities did not disclose a burial place, and the location of their remains has never been publicly established. On 26 May 2002, Pope John Paul II beatified the three Assumptionist martyrs during a liturgy in Plovdiv, recognizing that they had been killed in hatred of the faith. Their feast is observed on 11 November. They are venerated among the Catholic martyrs of the twentieth-century persecutions in Eastern Europe.
