Biography
Karl Serreqi was an Albanian Catholic priest of the Order of Friars Minor and is numbered among the martyrs of the Church in Albania during the communist dictatorship of the twentieth century. He was born in 1911 in Shkodër, a city on the lake of the same name in northern Albania that had long been a stronghold of Latin-rite Catholicism and of Franciscan pastoral work. The Franciscans had been present in the region for centuries, and their colleges and parishes formed many of the Albanian clergy. Serreqi entered that tradition as a young man, taking the Franciscan habit and pursuing the philosophical and theological studies required for ordination in the Order of Friars Minor.
After his ordination he served as a priest in northern Albania in the years when the country passed from monarchy through wartime occupation into the communist regime that seized power at the end of the Second World War. The new government, led by Enver Hoxha, regarded the Catholic Church as a foreign and hostile influence. Bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics were arrested in successive waves. Seminaries and convents were closed. In 1967 the regime proclaimed Albania the first atheist state in the world, banned public and private religious practice, and turned churches into warehouses, gymnasia, or ruins. Clergy who continued any form of ministry did so in secret and at the risk of imprisonment or death.
Father Serreqi was arrested and subjected to interrogation by the Sigurimi, the Albanian secret police. Later accounts of his martyrdom, preserved in the documentation assembled for the cause of beatification, stress that he was pressed to break the seal of confession and to disclose what a penitent had said in the sacrament of penance. He refused. For this fidelity, and for his identity as a priest who would not renounce his ministry, he was condemned to imprisonment. He spent years in the severe conditions of Albanian prisons and labor camps. The prison at Burrel, where many political and religious prisoners were held, was among the most notorious. He died there in 1978. His death is regarded by the Church as martyrdom in hatred of the faith, the result of prolonged suffering inflicted because he would not abandon his priestly obligations.
Together with thirty-seven other Catholics who died under the same regime—among them bishops, diocesan and religious priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay faithful—Karl Serreqi was beatified on 5 November 2016 in Shkodër. Pope Francis authorized the beatification; Cardinal Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided at the ceremony as papal legate. The group is commonly known as the Blessed Martyrs of Albania, and their memorial is observed on 5 November. Serreqi has not been canonized. Little is recorded in widely available sources about his family of origin, the exact sequence of his assignments, or the place of his burial, which, as with many who died in Albanian prisons, may have been an unmarked grave. What is firmly attested is his identity as a Franciscan priest of Shkodër, his death in detention in 1978, and his inclusion among those beatified for martyrdom under communist persecution.
