Biography

Short Description

Karmni Grima was born on 2 February 1838 in the village of Għarb on the island of Gozo, then part of the British Crown Colony of Malta. She came from a poor farming household and spent her working life as a peasant in the fields of western Gozo. Raised in the intensely Catholic rural culture of nineteenth-century Malta, she was known locally for piety, simplicity, and regular churchgoing. She never married and had no children, remaining a laywoman rather than entering a religious order, and she lived quietly in Għarb combining agricultural labour with prayer.

The episode that made her a figure of lasting religious importance took place on 22 June 1883. Returning from the fields, she passed a small countryside chapel known as Ta' Pinu, a modest structure dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and associated with the Gauci family (the name deriving from Pinu Gauci). She heard a voice calling her to enter. Inside, a woman’s voice, which she understood to come from a painting of the Assumption, told her to recite three Hail Marys in honour of the three days Mary’s body remained in the tomb. Frightened and unsure, she kept the experience secret for about two years.

She later confided in Francesco Portelli of Għarb, who said that he too had heard a mysterious voice in the same chapel calling for greater devotion. Word of these locutions spread among the Gozitan faithful. Pilgrims began to visit the chapel and to attribute graces and healings to Our Lady of Ta' Pinu. Devotion grew through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, turning a rural chapel into a major Marian shrine. Church authorities treated the claims with the caution typical of the period; the devotion was eventually approved and encouraged rather than suppressed.

In later life Grima suffered a long illness and was bedridden for an extended time. She died in Għarb on 25 February 1922. A large new church at Ta' Pinu, begun around the time of her death to house the growing pilgrimage, was built between 1920 and 1931 and was later made a minor basilica and a national shrine; the original painting was transferred into it. Grima has not been beatified or canonized, but she remains central to the origin of one of Malta’s principal Marian sanctuaries, later visited by several popes. In Gozo she is remembered as a poor unmarried peasant whose reported locution helped establish a lasting centre of popular Catholic devotion.
