Biography

Short Description

Karolina Kózka was born on 2 August 1898 in the village of Wał-Ruda in the parish of Zabawa, then in Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in southern Poland. She was the fourth of eleven children of the peasant farmers Jan Kózka and Maria Borzęcka. The household was poor and lived by agriculture, yet it was marked by regular family prayer, especially the daily rosary, and by faithful Catholic practice. Karolina received only a rudimentary schooling. From childhood she showed a strong religious sense: she attended Mass as often as farm work and the distance to church allowed, belonged to the Association of the Living Rosary, and took part in the Apostolate of Prayer. She also helped instruct younger children in the catechism and was remembered in the village for industry, cheerfulness, and modest conduct.

In the autumn of 1914 the First World War brought Russian imperial troops into the Tarnów region. On the morning of 18 November 1914 a Russian soldier came to the Kózka homestead and, under threat, forced sixteen-year-old Karolina and her father to accompany him. After some distance the soldier dismissed the father and led the girl into a nearby wood, where he attempted to rape her. Karolina resisted. The soldier then attacked her with a bladed weapon and inflicted many wounds. She broke free and fled but collapsed from loss of blood and died in a swampy thicket not far from her home. She was sixteen years old. Local memory and the later ecclesiastical inquiry treated her death as martyrdom in defense of chastity.

When she failed to return, a search was organized. Her body was found on 4 December 1914. She was buried on 6 December in the parish cemetery at Zabawa; the funeral drew a large crowd, and already then many regarded her as a martyr. Devotion to her memory spread in the Diocese of Tarnów. In 1986 her remains were exhumed and translated to a tomb in the parish church of Saint John the Baptist in Zabawa, which became the principal shrine of her cult.

Pope John Paul II beatified Karolina Kózka on 10 June 1987 in Tarnów, during an apostolic visit to Poland, and presented her to the Church as a model of purity and of fidelity to the Gospel, especially for the young. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 18 November. In popular devotion she is invoked as a patron of Polish youth and of those who seek to live chastely, and she is often compared with Saint Maria Goretti, another adolescent laywoman killed while resisting sexual assault.
