Biography

Kaspar Stanggassinger was born on 12 January 1871 in Berchtesgaden, in the Alpine region of the Kingdom of Bavaria, the second of sixteen children of a Catholic family whose father worked as a quarry owner. Growing up in a large household in a strongly Catholic mountain town, he was formed in the faith from childhood and early expressed a desire to become a priest. He completed his schooling in Bavaria and, as a young man, entered the diocesan seminary at Freising with the intention of serving as a priest of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.

During his seminary years he became acquainted with the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, whose missionary spirituality and community life attracted him. In 1892 he left the diocesan path and entered the Redemptorist novitiate at Gars am Inn. He made his religious vows in 1893 and continued his theological studies. On 16 June 1895 he was ordained a priest. He had hoped to be sent to the missions, particularly overseas, but his superiors judged that he was better suited to the work of educating and forming future Redemptorists, and they assigned him accordingly rather than to foreign missionary work.

Following ordination he served as a teacher, prefect, and spiritual guide at the Redemptorist house of studies at Dürrnberg, near Hallein. In this role he was responsible for the academic and religious formation of young candidates. Those who knew him described him as approachable, patient, and devoted to the students in his care. In 1899 he was transferred to Gars am Inn and appointed director of the seminary there, a position of considerable trust given his youth. His tenure in that office lasted only a short time.

In September 1899 Stanggassinger fell ill with appendicitis. The condition led to peritonitis, and he died at Gars am Inn on 26 September 1899, at the age of twenty-eight. He was buried at the Redemptorist monastery in Gars. A reputation for holiness persisted after his death, and a cause for beatification was introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 24 April 1988 in Rome. The Catholic Church observes his feast on 26 September. He has not been canonized. Blessed Kaspar Stanggassinger is remembered especially among the Redemptorists as a model of obedience, educational zeal, and a brief but intense priestly life in late nineteenth-century Bavaria.
