Biography

Short Description

Kazimierz Gostyński was born on 8 April 1884 in Warsaw, in the portion of Poland then under Russian imperial rule. He received priestly formation at the Warsaw seminary and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1908. From the outset of his ministry he devoted himself especially to the religious education of young people, serving as a catechist and teacher in secondary schools in Warsaw. In a period when Polish language, culture, and Catholic practice were constrained by the partitioning powers, his work among students belonged to a wider effort to sustain national and religious identity through education and parish life.

After Poland regained independence he continued that pedagogical and pastoral work and became closely associated with Lublin. There he served as a priest and educator, working with Catholic youth associations and promoting Christian formation in schools. He was known as a dedicated teacher who joined classroom instruction to spiritual guidance, emphasizing the moral and religious upbringing of adolescents while the newly independent state rebuilt its educational and civic institutions. He remained a diocesan priest rather than a member of a religious order, and his public reputation rested on this combination of parish ministry and school apostolate.

Following the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, Gostyński persisted in pastoral care and in efforts to maintain Polish Catholic education under occupation, activity the Nazi authorities treated as illicit. He was arrested by the Gestapo in Lublin in January 1940. After detention in local prisons he was deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and later transferred to Dachau, where large numbers of Polish clergy were imprisoned. Subjected to the harsh regime imposed on priest-prisoners, he died in Dachau on 6 July 1942.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, a group of Polish clergy, religious, and laity killed for their faith under the Nazi occupation. He is commemorated with that group on 12 June. In the Polish Church his memory is that of a priest-educator who remained faithful to his teaching and pastoral vocation until death in a concentration camp.
