Biography

Short Description

Saint Kilian, whose name also appears as Killian, Cillian, and Killan, was a seventh-century Irish missionary bishop venerated as the apostle of Franconia and as a martyr at Würzburg. The chief narrative of his life is the Latin Passio Kiliani, written in the eighth or ninth century, long after the events it recounts. That account presents him as an Irishman of noble birth, trained in the monastic schools of Ireland, who left his homeland as a peregrinus, a voluntary exile for Christ. He traveled with a small company; the two companions later joined to his cult were Colman, a priest, and Totnan, a deacon. Their journey through the Frankish lands brought them to the valley of the Main, where they settled in the Würzburg region among people who were still largely pagan or only superficially Christianized.

Kilian preached with reported success and is credited with converting the local Frankish ruler, Duke Gozbert. Tradition holds that Kilian received episcopal consecration; some versions of the legend place that consecration in Rome, an episode many modern historians regard as a later addition meant to underline the Roman orthodoxy of the Würzburg church. The crisis of the story came when Kilian, enforcing Christian marriage discipline, declared that Gozbert's union with Geilana, the widow of the duke's brother, was unlawful. While Gozbert was absent, Geilana is said to have had Kilian, Colman, and Totnan seized and beheaded. Their bodies and the liturgical books they had brought from Ireland were hidden. The traditional date assigned to the martyrdom is 8 July 689.

An Irish missionary presence in the Würzburg area in the late seventh century fits the wider pattern of Irish activity in the Frankish kingdoms, and the three martyrs were already the object of a local cult by the mid-eighth century. In 752 Bishop Burchard of Würzburg, working in the circle of Saint Boniface, reported the discovery of their relics. The translation of those relics and the building of churches on the sites associated with their burial and death established Kilian as patron of the new diocese of Würzburg and of Franconia. Throughout the Middle Ages his feast on 8 July was a major civic and liturgical celebration in Würzburg, marked by processions of the relics. He is customarily shown as a bishop holding a sword, often with Colman and Totnan beside him.

Kilian's relics remain in Würzburg, chiefly at the Neumünster church near the cathedral that bears his name. He is still the principal patron of Würzburg and of Franconia and has been invoked against rheumatism and gout. The historical figure behind the legend is that of an Irish bishop-missionary who died a violent death in Franconia in the later seventh century. The court intrigue of the Passio belongs to the conventions of martyr hagiography and cannot be confirmed from contemporary documents. No early source records his exact place or year of birth; the later Irish association of his origin with Mullagh in County Cavan rests on local tradition rather than on evidence from the first centuries of his cult.
