Biography

Short Description

King Ladislaus I, known in Hungarian as Szent László, was a late-eleventh-century ruler of the Árpád dynasty and one of the principal royal saints of medieval Hungary. He was born in Poland during the exile of his father, Béla, who later reigned as Béla I of Hungary. His mother belonged to the Polish Piast family. Together with his brother Géza, Ladislaus spent part of his youth in Poland before the family returned to Hungary. Dynastic strife with their cousin King Solomon dominated the 1060s and early 1070s. After Géza seized the crown, Ladislaus supported him; when Géza died in 1077, Ladislaus became king, though Solomon remained a rival for some years.

As king, Ladislaus strengthened royal power, issued law codes that survive in later compilations, and worked to complete the Christianization of the realm by punishing remnants of pagan practice and protecting ecclesiastical property. He established the bishopric of Zagreb and developed the see of Várad, among other foundations. On the frontiers he fought nomadic groups such as the Pechenegs and Cumans and extended Hungarian authority over Croatia and neighbouring Slavonia, taking the title of king of Croatia. He generally aligned with the papacy during the conflicts of the Investiture Controversy.

Ladislaus married Adelaide of Rheinfelden, daughter of Rudolf of Rheinfelden. They had daughters, one of whom, Piroska, married the Byzantine emperor John II Komnenos and is honoured in the East as Saint Irene. Medieval chronicles and later legends present Ladislaus as the ideal knight-king: tall, pious, and miraculously aided in battle. Stories of his rescue of a kidnapped girl from a Cuman warrior, of a stag that indicated a church site, and of other wonders circulated widely and fed his cult.

He died in 1095, traditionally at Nitra, at the outset of a military expedition; some accounts connect his last plans with the preaching of the First Crusade. He was interred in the cathedral of Várad (present-day Oradea). Veneration grew quickly. Pope Celestine III canonized him in 1192. His feast day is 27 June. He is honoured as a patron of Hungary and of Transylvania, and his figure remained central to Hungarian royal and national symbolism throughout the Middle Ages and beyond.
