Biography

Short Description

Kinga of Poland, also known as Cunegunda or Kunigunda, was a princess of the Hungarian Árpád dynasty, born in 1224, according to long-standing tradition at Esztergom in the Kingdom of Hungary. She was a daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary and Queen Maria Laskarina, herself a daughter of Theodore I Laskaris of Nicaea. Through her father she was a niece of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Several of her sisters likewise entered later Catholic veneration: Margaret of Hungary became a Dominican nun and saint, and Yolanda (also called Helen) married into the Piast dynasty and later lived as a Poor Clare. Kinga grew up in a royal household marked by the Mongol invasion of Hungary in 1241 and by close patronage of the Franciscan and Dominican orders, which were then spreading through Central Europe.

In 1239 she was married to Bolesław, later styled Bolesław V the Chaste, a Piast duke who from 1243 ruled Kraków and Sandomierz and held the senior ducal title in fragmented thirteenth-century Poland. The marriage formed part of the dynastic ties between the Árpáds and the Kraków Piasts in the generation after the Mongol attacks on both kingdoms. Medieval lives and later Catholic tradition agree that the spouses bound themselves by a vow of perpetual chastity and that the marriage was never consummated; they had no children, which also matches the political record. As duchess, Kinga lived through the reconstruction of Lesser Poland after 1241 and through a further Mongol raid in 1259–1260 that again devastated Kraków. Later tradition associates her with refuge in the Pieniny region during that incursion. In her public role she is remembered for almsgiving, for the endowment of churches and religious houses, and for care of the poor and of people uprooted by war, though the precise administrative details of her household are only sparsely documented in contemporary charters.

A famous legend, which should be distinguished from verified chronicle evidence, connects Kinga with the salt mines of Wieliczka and Bochnia. It relates that, as a dowry gift from her father, she asked for salt and cast her betrothal ring into a Hungarian mine, and that the ring was afterwards found inside a salt crystal in Poland. The tale became the basis of her popular patronage of salt miners and is commemorated in chapels within the Wieliczka mine. Whatever the origin of the story, devotion to Kinga among mining communities in southern Poland is historically well attested. She and her husband were also linked with support for Franciscan friars in Kraków and with the religious culture of the Piast court in the mid-thirteenth century.

After Bolesław died in 1279, Kinga disposed of her dower rights and worldly estate. In 1280 she founded a monastery of the Order of Saint Clare at Stary Sącz in the Sącz region of southern Lesser Poland and entered the community herself. Hagiographical accounts emphasize that she chose a life of austerity and declined to exercise princely authority from within the cloister; some sources state that she refused the office of abbess. She spent her last years as a Poor Clare and died at the monastery on 24 July 1292. She was buried in the convent church at Stary Sącz, which remained the center of her cult.

Local veneration at her tomb is recorded in the later Middle Ages. She was beatified in 1690 by Pope Alexander VIII and was long invoked as a patroness of Poland and of Lithuania. Pope John Paul II canonized her on 16 June 1999 during a Mass at Stary Sącz. Her liturgical feast is kept on 24 July. In Catholic devotion she is honored as a patron of Poland and Lithuania and of miners, especially salt miners, and she remains closely associated with the Poor Clare monastery that houses her relics.
