Biography

Short Description

Kirill II, also rendered Cyril II, was bishop of Rostov in northeastern Rus' in the thirteenth century. The year and place of his birth are unknown, as is the identity of his family; the surviving Russian chronicles and later ecclesiastical records do not preserve any information about his origins or youth. He entered the monastic life and rose to become archimandrite of the Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Vladimir, one of the leading houses of the Vladimir-Suzdal land. After the death of Bishop Kirill I of Rostov in 1230, he was chosen for the vacant see and was consecrated bishop of Rostov in 1231. The diocese of Rostov at that period was extensive, taking in not only Rostov itself but also Yaroslavl and the Belozersk region, and its bishop was among the more important hierarchs of the northeastern Russian church, subordinate to the metropolitan of Kiev.

The early years of his episcopate were overshadowed by the Mongol invasion. In 1237–1238 the forces of Batu Khan overran the principalities of Ryazan, Vladimir, and the surrounding lands. Rostov’s prince, Vasilko Konstantinovich, was captured after the disastrous battle on the River Sit in March 1238 and was killed by the Mongols for refusing to adopt their practices or to fight against his own people. Chronicle tradition records that Bishop Kirill recovered the body of the slain prince and brought it to Rostov for burial in the cathedral, an act that associated the bishop with the memory of a ruler later regarded as a martyr. Whether the bishop was present in Rostov during the passage of the Mongol armies is not entirely clear; some later narratives imply that he may have been in the northern reaches of his diocese at the critical moment.

After the invasion, Kirill II remained at the head of the Rostov church during the first generation of Mongol domination, when Russian princes traveled to the Horde to obtain patents of rule and when the Orthodox Church began to negotiate its own standing with the khans. The written sources of the mid-thirteenth century mention him only sporadically, in connection with princely burials, successions, and the ordinary government of the diocese. No sermons, letters, or theological works that can be securely attributed to him have survived, and it is therefore not possible to reconstruct his personal teaching or his relations with the metropolitan see in any detail. He continued in office for more than three decades, spanning the reigns of several Rostov princes and the early years of Alexander Nevsky’s prominence in Novgorod and Vladimir.

Kirill II died on 21 May 1262. He was buried in the Dormition Cathedral (Uspensky sobor) of Rostov, the traditional resting place of the bishops of that see. In later centuries he has occasionally been counted among the locally remembered hierarchs of Rostov, but he did not become the subject of a well-developed vita or of a widely observed independent feast, unlike earlier Rostov saints such as Leontius, Isaiah, and Ignatius. Modern historical and hagiographical reference works therefore treat him primarily as a documented thirteenth-century diocesan bishop whose life is known only in outline from the chronicles.
