Biography

Short Description

Saint Kjeld, known in Latin as Ketillus and in Danish as Kjeld or Keld, was a priest of the medieval Danish church who lived in the twelfth century and was associated throughout his recorded career with the cathedral of Viborg in northern Jutland. The date and place of his birth are not preserved in reliable sources; he appears in the historical record as a member of the cathedral chapter at Viborg, a see established in the eleventh century and a principal ecclesiastical centre in Jutland. He rose to become provost (praepositus) of the chapter, the dignitary who stood at the head of the canons and oversaw both the temporal affairs of the community and the ordering of divine worship in the cathedral. He belonged to the secular clergy of a cathedral chapter rather than to a monastic order whose name is securely attested in the sources.

What can be said of his character rests on the hagiographical tradition that grew up around his tomb and on the fact of his later papal recognition. He was remembered as austere, charitable toward the poor, and unwilling to seek high office. He made a pilgrimage to Rome, which in the twelfth century was both a penitential journey and a means of contact with the papal court. After the death of a bishop of Viborg, the chapter and local opinion favoured Kjeld’s election to the episcopal see; he refused, an episode that later writers treated as evidence of humility. Such refusals are a common motif in saints’ lives, but in Kjeld’s case they are consistent with his remaining in the office of provost until his death rather than accepting the mitre.

He died in 1150, the year given by medieval tradition, and 11 July was observed as both his dies natalis and his feast. He was buried in Viborg Cathedral. Reports of miracles at the grave—healings and other signs—led to a local cult. In the 1180s Bishop Niels of Viborg and other Danish prelates petitioned Pope Alexander III to permit the public veneration of Kjeld. The pope’s authorization, customarily dated to 1188, constituted papal confirmation of the cult and is the basis for regarding Kjeld as a canonized saint of the Latin Church. His relics were enshrined in the cathedral, which became a pilgrimage site in the later Middle Ages. Legend also associated him with deliverance from fire, a motif that later attached to his local memory.

The Reformation in Denmark, carried through in the 1530s, suppressed the public cult, dismantled shrines, and ended the medieval pilgrimage. Viborg Cathedral itself was rebuilt after later fires and alterations, and little of the medieval shrine survives. Kjeld nevertheless remains the patron saint of Viborg, and his feast on 11 July is noted in Catholic martyrologies and in local historical memory. Because contemporary documentation is sparse, much of the colour of his biography depends on later legend; the secure outline is that of a cathedral provost of Viborg, dead in 1150, whose holiness was acknowledged by Pope Alexander III a generation later.
