Biography

Short Description

Konrad I von Raitenbuch belonged to the family of the lords of Raitenbuch, a noble house whose seat was the castle of Raitenbuch in the Upper Palatinate, in the medieval Duchy of Bavaria within the Holy Roman Empire (near present-day Velburg). Reliable sources do not preserve a verified year or town of birth; he is generally assigned to the later eleventh century on chronological grounds, but that estimate is not a documented date and should not be treated as one. As a young man he entered the Benedictine abbey of Siegburg (Michaelsberg) in the Rhineland, a monastery founded in the mid-eleventh century by Archbishop Anno II of Cologne and closely identified with contemporary monastic reform. The Siegburg observance, related to the broader Cluniac and Lotharingian reform currents, shaped his formation as a monk before he was raised to the episcopate.

In 1126 the cathedral chapter of Regensburg elected him bishop of that ancient Bavarian see, in succession to Hartwig I. The election fell only a few years after the Concordat of Worms (1122) had recast the terms of episcopal appointment in the empire, and in the opening phase of the reign of King Lothair III. Regensburg was among the principal ecclesiastical centres of Bavaria: it possessed a powerful cathedral chapter, the imperial abbey of St. Emmeram, and a growing cluster of reformed houses in the diocese, among them the Benedictine abbey of Prüfening. Konrad’s monastic background and reform connections help explain why a monk from a Rhineland abbey was acceptable as ordinary of a major Bavarian church in that generation.

The written record of his episcopate is comparatively thin, as is often the case for bishops who held office only a short time in the early twelfth century. He appears in the surviving notices as diocesan bishop, acting in the ordinary governance of churches and monasteries under his care. His years in office overlapped the outbreak of the papal schism of 1130, when Innocent II and Anacletus II both claimed the Roman see and the German episcopate was obliged to take a position; the precise detail of Konrad’s own alignment is not richly documented in the narrative sources. He is not known to have been married. As a Benedictine monk promoted to the episcopate he lived under clerical celibacy, and no children are recorded. He was neither Bishop of Rome nor patriarch of an Eastern see.

Konrad I died in 1132, after roughly six years as bishop; episcopal catalogues commonly give 19 May as the day. He was succeeded by Heinrich I von Wolfratshausen. The place of his death and of his burial is not securely established in the sources used here, though bishops of Regensburg were often interred at the cathedral or at a major urban monastery. He has not been the object of a formal canonization or beatification, nor of a widely observed liturgical cult, and he is not associated with a feast day or with recognized patronages. Later historians remember him chiefly as a reforming Benedictine who briefly occupied the see of Regensburg in the generation after the Concordat of Worms. The scarcity of chronicles devoted to him means that many personal particulars remain unknown.
