Biography

Short Description

Lachtín mac Tarbín, known in Latin sources as Lactinus and in later Irish calendars as Lachtnan or Lachtain of Freshford, was an early medieval Irish monastic saint and church founder. Genealogical tracts identify him as a member of the Corca Loígde, a people of south-west Munster whose territory lay in what is now County Cork. His patronymic records his father as Tarbín (also given as Torbén or Tarbhtha). No contemporary source preserves a year or place of birth, and nothing reliable is known of his childhood beyond this Munster origin.

Irish tradition presents him as a monk and abbot of the generation that followed the great sixth-century founders. Some later notices associate him with the community of Saint Comgall at Bangor; others place him in the orbit of Saint Mo Chutu (Carthage) of Rahan and Lismore. His principal foundation was the church and monastery of Achad Úr, now Freshford in County Kilkenny, in the early medieval kingdom of Osraige. He is also credited with a church at Bealach Feabhrat and with a lasting dedication at Domhnach Mór (Donoughmore) in Muskerry, County Cork. These sites indicate a sphere of activity running from west Munster into Ossory.

The Annals of the Four Masters record the death of “St. Lachtnan, of Achadh-Ur” under the year 622. His feast on 19 March is already entered in the earliest Irish martyrologies, including the Martyrology of Tallaght and the Félire Óengusso, and was repeated in later calendars such as the Martyrology of Gorman and the Martyrology of Donegal. No medieval Vita of Lachtín is known to survive, so the outline of his career rests on these annalistic and liturgical notices together with local dedications and genealogies.

Devotion to him continued in Ossory and Munster through the high Middle Ages. In the twelfth century the church at Freshford received a notable Romanesque doorway, and a bronze arm-shaped reliquary known as St Lachtin’s Arm (Lámh Lachtaín) was made to house a relic of the saint; the shrine, now in the National Museum of Ireland, bears inscriptions naming its craftsman and secular patrons. Lachtín remained the patron of Freshford and was venerated at Donoughmore. His cult belongs to the locally recognized saints of the early Irish church and was never the subject of a formal papal canonization.
