Biography

Short Description

Blessed Ladislaus of Gielniów (Polish: Władysław z Gielniowa; also Ladislas of Gielniów) was a Polish Observant Franciscan friar, preacher, and religious poet of the later fifteenth century. He took his name from Gielniów, a small town in the historical Sandomierz lands of the Kingdom of Poland (today in the Masovian Voivodeship), where he was born in the mid-fifteenth century. No contemporary source preserves a verified exact year of birth; later notices conventionally place it around the 1440s. He is reported to have studied at the Kraków Academy before entering the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor, known in Poland as the Bernardines after the influence of St. Bernardino of Siena. He joined the order in the 1460s, when Observant houses were being founded or consolidated in Kraków, Warsaw, and other Polish cities, with an emphasis on poverty, popular preaching, and devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

Within the order he became one of the best-known preachers of his generation in the Polish lands. He delivered sermons in vernacular Polish rather than Latin, which made Catholic teaching more accessible to townspeople and the wider laity. He also composed religious songs and poems in Polish, including hymns on the Passion of Christ and the Name of Jesus, which circulated in churches and processions and later came to be counted among early monuments of Polish-language religious verse. He held office as guardian of the Warsaw convent and served more than one term as provincial minister of the Polish Observant province in the last decades of the fifteenth century and the first years of the sixteenth, a mark of the trust of his brethren.

His spirituality combined Observant austerity with promotion of the Holy Name, meditation on Christ’s suffering, and calls to moral conversion. Later tradition associates him with preaching missions not only in the Crown of Poland but also in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, then joined to Poland by dynastic union, and with concern for the poor. The best-known account of his last months is that he was stricken while preaching on the Passion on Good Friday in 1505 in Warsaw. He died in the Warsaw Bernardine monastery on 4 May 1505 and was buried in the conventual church of that community, later known as the Church of St. Anne in Warsaw, where a cult developed at his tomb.

The Holy See confirmed his immemorial cult on 11 February 1750, during the pontificate of Benedict XIV, an act that in the practice of the time constituted beatification. He has not been canonized. His feast is commonly observed on 4 May, the anniversary of his death. In later Catholic devotion he has been invoked especially as a patron of Warsaw. His memory survives in Franciscan hagiography, in the history of Polish vernacular religious song, and in the association of his relics and cult with St. Anne’s Church in Warsaw.
