Biography

Short Description

Laureana Franco, widely known in the Philippines as Ka Luring, was a Roman Catholic lay catechist whose reputation for holiness rests on a long life of quiet, unpaid instruction in the faith rather than on membership in a religious order or on any public office in the Church. She was born on 4 July 1936 in Tondo, Manila, then part of the Philippine Commonwealth, into a poor family. She remained a laywoman all her life, never marrying and never entering a convent. Her adult vocation took shape through the Legion of Mary, the international lay apostolate founded by Frank Duff, which gave her a rule of prayer, weekly meetings, and a mandate to visit homes and teach Christian doctrine. From that framework she developed a personal apostolate of catechesis that lasted for decades, directed especially toward children, the poor, and families in the urban parishes of Metro Manila.

Her work became closely identified with the community around Don Bosco in Better Living Subdivision, Parañaque City, in what is now the Diocese of Parañaque. There she was a familiar figure: a simple, poorly dressed woman who went from house to house, prepared children for First Communion and Confirmation, and insisted on regular attendance at Mass and recitation of the Rosary. Contemporaries remembered her for patience with difficult pupils, fidelity to the Church’s teaching, and a personal life marked by daily Eucharist, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and extreme material simplicity. She did not found an institute or write books; the evidence for her life is the testimony of priests, fellow Legionaries, and the families she instructed. That testimony portrays a laywoman who treated catechesis as a full-time vocation rather than a part-time parish activity.

Franco died on 7 October 2011. In the years after her death, clergy and laity of the Diocese of Parañaque gathered documentation of her life and of favors attributed to her intercession. Bishop Jesse E. Mercado of Parañaque opened the diocesan inquiry into her cause for beatification and canonization, and she received the title Servant of God, the first formal step in the Catholic process. The interest of the cause lies partly in her state of life: she is put forward as a model of the lay catechist, not of the priest or the religious. As of the early 2020s she had not been declared Venerable, beatified, or canonized, and she had no assigned feast day or official patronages. Her story remains that of an obscure urban catechist of the later twentieth and early twenty-first centuries whose local fame grew only after her death.
