Biography

No reliable hagiographical or historical source identifies a Christian saint, blessed, pope, patriarch, or similarly venerated figure whose personal name is simply Law. The Roman Martyrology, the major Western legendaries, Orthodox synaxaria, and the calendars of the Oriental Orthodox churches and the Church of the East do not record a cult under that name. Because the subject cannot be matched to a documented person, no birth year, death year, birthplace, burial, feast, patronage, or act of canonization or beatification can be verified, and those fields are left empty rather than filled by conjecture.

Names that are sometimes confused with Law must not be substituted. Saint Lawrence (Laurentius), the third-century deacon and martyr of Rome, is a different figure with a well-attested cult and a feast on 10 August. Saint Laud (Laudus, Lo) of Coutances is likewise a distinct Gallo-Roman bishop. The English nonjuror and spiritual writer William Law (1686–1761), author of A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life, was never beatified or canonized and is not the subject of a liturgical cult. None of these identifications is warranted by the name given here.

In the absence of a verifiable individual, nothing can be stated about gender, religious profession, marriage, children, or tenure of the see of Rome or of an Eastern patriarchal throne. Patronages attached in popular devotion to other saints (for example Lawrence as patron of cooks, deacons, or the poor) do not transfer to an unidentified Law. A careful historian therefore records only the negative finding: the requested biography cannot be written from surviving sources, and empty fields are the correct representation of that gap.
