Biography

Short Description

Lawrence Han I-hyŏng belongs to the tradition of Korean Catholicism, a community that emerged in the late eighteenth century through the efforts of Korean Confucian scholars who encountered Catholic books and ideas while visiting China. Converts typically received baptismal names drawn from the saints of the Western Church; Lawrence, recalling the third-century Roman deacon and martyr, was among the names chosen. The Korean Church developed for decades as a lay movement before the arrival of foreign priests, and it endured repeated, violent suppressions by the Joseon state, which regarded Catholicism as a heterodox teaching that undermined filial piety and loyalty to the throne.

Persecutions of Catholics took place in several waves across the nineteenth century, most notably in 1801, 1839, 1846 and 1866. Thousands of believers, including men, women and children from every social rank, were arrested, tortured and executed. The Catholic Church has recognized two large groups of these victims: the 103 Korean Martyrs canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984 and a further 124 martyrs beatified by Pope Francis in 2014. Individual biographies of many of these figures survive only in fragmentary form, preserved in interrogation records, letters of missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and later hagiographical compilations.

Verifiable particulars of Lawrence Han I-hyŏng's own life—his year and place of birth, family circumstances, occupation, marital status, and the exact date, place and manner of his death—are not established in the standard historical and martyrological sources readily available. Several martyrs bore the surname Han and various baptismal names, yet matching the romanized form I-hyŏng to a fully documented individual requires consultation of specialized Korean ecclesiastical archives. In the absence of such confirmation, it is not possible to assign him with certainty to either the canonized or the beatified group, nor to reconstruct a detailed personal history.

What can be said is that any Korean Catholic of that era who remained faithful under persecution participated in a remarkable chapter of Church history. The early Korean Church produced both scholarly apologists and simple believers who chose death rather than recant. Women often served as catechists and organizers when male leaders were imprisoned. If Han I-hyŏng was numbered among the martyrs, his witness would have formed part of this collective testimony, later honored by the universal Church as an example of fidelity in a non-Christian society.

Because so little can be confirmed about this specific person from widely accessible records, any fuller account must await examination of primary documents held by the Korean Catholic Church or the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Until then, Lawrence Han I-hyŏng stands as a name within the larger, well-attested story of Korean Catholicism's growth through suffering in the Joseon period.
