Biography

Short Description

Saint Lazarus of Murom, also called Lazarus of Murom-Onega, was a fourteenth-century Eastern Orthodox monk commemorated in the Russian Orthodox Church as the founder of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God at Murom on Lake Onega. He should not be confused with Lazarus of Bethany, with Prince Lazar of Serbia, or with other monastic saints of the same name. Nearly all biographical information about him comes from a hagiographical Life written well after the events it describes, most likely in the late fifteenth or the sixteenth century, and from subsequent liturgical services. Independent fourteenth-century Novgorodian chronicles do not mention him, and modern historians therefore treat the vita as a mixture of plausible missionary-monastic history and later pious elaboration.

The Life presents Lazarus as a Greek who had already been tonsured in the Byzantine ecclesiastical world. It links him both with Rome and with Constantinople, a pairing that has led scholars to debate whether the author meant the city of Rome in Italy, Constantinople as New Rome, or a conventional hagiographical itinerary of a Greek monk. The same text places his coming to Novgorod in the time of Archbishop Vasily Kalika, who governed the Novgorod see from 1330 to 1352 and is independently attested as a prelate with Greek connections. After Vasily's death, according to the narrative, Lazarus was directed by a vision of the Theotokos to leave Novgorod for the remote Onega forests, then a frontier of Novgorodian tribute and mission among Finnic peoples commonly called Chud in Russian sources.

On the eastern shore of Lake Onega, at a place named Murom (unrelated to the ancient city of Murom on the Oka), he established a hermitage that developed into a monastery dedicated to the Dormition. The vita recounts the clearing of land, the building of a church, opposition from local non-Christian inhabitants, and eventual conversions, together with the saint's reputation for strict asceticism. Traditional Orthodox calendars give 8 March 1391 as the date of his death and some recensions of the Life claim that he was one hundred and five years old; that age is a hagiographical topos and does not constitute a verified year of birth. His body was buried at the monastery, which became the centre of a local cult and was later known as the Murom-Uspensky Monastery, in the territory of what is now Pudozhsky District in the Republic of Karelia.

Lazarus is honoured as a prepodobny, a monastic saint, with his principal feast on 8 March. He never held the office of bishop, patriarch, or pope. The tradition of his Life portrays him as a monk from his youth, and there is no record of a wife or of children. Specific patronages of places, professions, or illnesses beyond the general veneration of the Onega monastery are not securely documented in historical sources. Recognition of his sanctity followed the Eastern Orthodox pattern of local liturgical commemoration rather than a Western process of beatification and papal canonization; no individual hierarch is recorded as having issued a formal act of canonization comparable to a papal bull. The most that can be said with caution is that a Greek or Greek-trained monk named Lazarus is remembered as a monastic founder and missionary on Lake Onega in the later fourteenth century, that his community endured as a northern Russian monastery, and that his memory was fixed in the Russian Orthodox calendar on 8 March.
