Biography

Lazër Shantoja was an Albanian Catholic priest, poet, and journalist who was executed in the first wave of communist persecution of the Church in Albania and was later beatified among the Martyrs of Albania. He was born on 2 September 1892 in Shkodër, then in the Ottoman Empire and a principal centre of Albanian Catholicism. He received his education in the Catholic schools of his native city and continued ecclesiastical studies in Innsbruck, Austria, a frequent destination for Albanian seminarians of his generation. Ordained a priest of the Latin rite, he returned to serve in Albania in the years after independence, when the local Church was reorganizing itself under new political conditions.

Besides pastoral work, Shantoja took part in Albanian letters and in the Catholic press of the interwar period. He wrote poetry and journalism and worked as a translator, belonging to the Catholic intelligentsia that sought to sustain both religious life and Albanian culture. He held pastoral assignments in northern Albania and later in Tirana. His combination of preaching, writing, and public engagement made him a recognizable figure among clergy in the first half of the twentieth century, an era of successive regimes, wartime occupation, and rising ideological conflict.

After the communist seizure of power under Enver Hoxha in late 1944, the new authorities moved rapidly against the Catholic Church, which they treated as an enemy of the regime. Shantoja was arrested in that repression. In prison he was subjected to severe torture; later testimony and beatification materials report that his legs were broken and that he was left in extreme suffering. He was shot on 5 March 1945 in Tirana, at the age of fifty-two. His death belonged to the opening and most violent phase of a persecution that lasted for decades and claimed bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics.

On 5 November 2016, in a beatification liturgy in Shkodër, Shantoja was declared blessed together with thirty-seven other Albanian Catholics killed between 1945 and 1974. Pope Francis authorized the beatification; Cardinal Angelo Amato presided as papal legate. The Blessed Martyrs of Albania are commemorated on 5 November. Shantoja is remembered as a priest who joined pastoral service and literary work to martyrdom at the outset of one of the harshest anti-religious campaigns of the twentieth century.
