Biography

Short Description

Léon Papin Dupont, commonly known in English as Leo Dupont and remembered as the Holy Man of Tours, was born on 24 January 1797 in Saint-Pierre on the island of Martinique, then a French colonial possession in the Caribbean. He came from a prosperous family of French planters. After early schooling in Martinique he was sent to complete his education at St. Mary’s College in Baltimore, Maryland, an institution conducted by the Society of Saint-Sulpice. He later studied law in Paris and qualified as an advocate. Inheriting substantial means from his family, he eventually left the Caribbean and, in the 1830s, established himself permanently in the city of Tours in west-central France, where he would remain for the rest of his life.

In Tours, Dupont lived as a devout Catholic layman of independent fortune. He never married and for many years shared his household with his mother. He became known for personal austerity, regular attendance at the sacraments, generous almsgiving, and an intense interest in the Catholic devotional movements of the nineteenth century. He was closely associated with the Discalced Carmelite monastery of Tours and with the Carmelite nun Sister Marie of St. Peter (1816–1848), who reported private revelations calling for reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus, understood as a response to blasphemy and the profanation of Sundays. Dupont took up this cause with great energy and made it the center of his public religious activity.

In his own residence he arranged a domestic oratory in which an image of the Holy Face—of the type associated with the veil of Veronica—was exposed, and he kept a lamp burning continuously before it. The oratory drew visitors and pilgrims; accounts of conversions and of physical healings circulated in connection with prayer offered there. Dupont also fostered devotion to Saint Martin of Tours, the fourth-century bishop whose cult was central to the city’s religious identity, and he supported other works of piety and charity in the diocese. His reputation for holiness among clergy and laity earned him the popular title “the Holy Man of Tours.”

Dupont died in Tours on 18 March 1876. His former house later became the Oratory of the Holy Face, which continued the devotion he had championed and remained a local center of pilgrimage. A cause for his beatification was introduced in the Catholic Church; he was granted the title Venerable after a decree on his heroic virtues associated with Pope Pius XII in 1939. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he holds no official universal feast or defined patronages in the liturgical calendar.
