Biography

Short Description

Leo I of Cava, known in Italian as Leone I di Cava and venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint Leo of Cava, was a Benedictine monk and the second abbot of the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity (La Trinità della Cava) at Cava de' Tirreni in Campania, in southern Italy. He is styled Leo I to distinguish him from later abbots of the same house who also bore the name Leo. According to the tradition preserved at Cava, he was a native of Lucca in Tuscany; no reliable source records the year of his birth. In the early eleventh century he entered the community that Saint Alferius (Alferio Pappacarbone) had established around 1011 at a cave in the hills above Cava. That monastery followed the Rule of Saint Benedict and stood in the current of Cluniac reform then spreading through Italy. The place-name Cava itself recalls the cave in which Alferius first lived as a hermit before a regular Benedictine convent formed around him.

When Alferius died in 1050, Leo was chosen to succeed him and governed the abbey for some twenty-nine years, until 1079. His abbacy coincided with a period of deep political change in southern Italy, as Norman power expanded across Campania and Lombard rule in the Principality of Salerno drew toward its end. Under Leo the still-young monastery strengthened its position: the community increased in size, and the abbey obtained churches, lands, and other endowments from local nobility and from Norman lords. Cava would later become the head of a congregation of dependent priories and one of the principal Benedictine centres of the Mezzogiorno. Later Cava annals and lives of the early abbots portray Leo as a man of austerity, liturgical regularity, and practical government, who consolidated the founder’s work and gave the house a more institutional character after the death of its charismatic first abbot.

Modern historians treat some of the medieval Cava chronicles with caution. Parts of the so-called Chronicon Cavense and related texts have been shown to contain later fabrications, and many colourful episodes attached to Leo in hagiographical writing cannot be independently verified. The basic outline of his career is nonetheless securely attested: he was Alferius’s successor, he ruled as abbot from 1050, and he died in 1079. He died at the abbey on 12 July 1079 and was buried there. He was succeeded by Peter of Pappacarbone, known as Saint Peter I of Cava, a kinsman of the founder Alferius. A liturgical cult of the first abbots grew up at Cava during the Middle Ages and was maintained in the congregation that took its name from the abbey.

In 1893 Pope Leo XIII confirmed the ancient cult of the first four abbots of Cava—Alferius, Leo I, Peter I, and Constabilis—an act regarded in Catholic practice as an equipollent canonization rather than a new process of beatification and canonization in the modern sense. Saint Leo of Cava is commemorated on 12 July, the traditional date of his death. As a professed Benedictine monk and abbot he lived under vows of celibacy; there is no record of a marriage or of children. The Abbey of Cava remains an active Benedictine monastery, and Leo’s long tenure is remembered as the period in which the foundation passed from the hands of its founder into a more settled monastic life and began to acquire the estates and prestige that marked its later medieval history.
