Biography

Short Description

Leo, later known as Pope Leo I and commonly styled Leo the Great, was born in Tuscany in the late fourth or early fifth century, the son of a man named Quintianus. The precise year and town of his birth are not recorded in contemporary sources; the Liber Pontificalis identifies him only as Tuscan by origin. By the 430s he had become a leading deacon of the Roman Church under Popes Celestine I and Sixtus III, entrusted with correspondence, administration, and delicate negotiations. In 440, while he was in Gaul attempting to reconcile the imperial general Flavius Aetius and the magistrate Albinus, Sixtus III died. The Roman clergy and people elected Leo in his absence; he returned and was consecrated bishop of Rome on 29 September 440. No reliable source records a wife or children, and as a senior Roman cleric of this period he is treated as unmarried.

Leo’s pontificate is remembered above all for its Christological teaching and for the assertion of Roman primacy. In 449 he addressed his Tome (Tomus ad Flavianum) to Patriarch Flavian of Constantinople, stating that Jesus Christ is one person in two natures, divine and human, united without confusion, change, division, or separation. The letter was read at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 and received with the acclamation that Peter had spoken through Leo; it became a foundational text of Chalcedonian orthodoxy. Leo rejected the so-called Robber Council of Ephesus (449), opposed remnants of Pelagianism, Manichaeism, and Priscillianism in the West, and wrote extensively on the unique authority of the see of Peter. Ninety-six sermons and 143 letters survive, treating liturgy, fasting, almsgiving, clerical discipline, and the unity of the Church.

He also acted as a public protector of Rome in an age of imperial collapse. In 452, when Attila the Hun invaded northern Italy and appeared poised to march on the city, Leo headed an embassy that included the consul Gennadius Avienus and the prefect Trigetius. They met Attila, traditionally near the Mincio River; Attila then withdrew from Italy. Later tradition credited Leo’s persuasion, though famine, disease, and Eastern Roman military pressure also weighed on the Hunnic decision. In June 455 the Vandal king Genseric landed at the mouth of the Tiber. Leo met him at the gates and obtained undertakings that the city would not be burned and that the inhabitants would not be massacred; the Vandals nonetheless plundered Rome for some two weeks. These episodes, widely reported in later historiography, established Leo’s reputation as a civic as well as a spiritual leader.

Leo died in Rome on 10 November 461 and was the first pope buried in the portico of Old St. Peter’s Basilica; in 688 Pope Sergius I translated the relics into the basilica itself, where they remain. He was venerated as a saint from an early date, without a formal medieval canonization process of the later type. In 1754 Pope Benedict XIV named him a Doctor of the Church. In the Latin Church his feast is kept on 10 November (formerly 11 April); some Eastern calendars commemorate him on 18 February. Together with Gregory I he is one of only two popes customarily called “the Great.” His letters and sermons remain primary sources for fifth-century doctrine, papal self-understanding, and the last decades of the Western Roman Empire.
