Biography

Short Description

Saint Leodegar, also known as Leodegarius or Léger, was a Burgundian nobleman, abbot, and bishop whose career unfolded amid the factional violence of late Merovingian Francia in the seventh century. He was born in the early seventh century to a family of high rank; his father Bodilon belonged to the Burgundian aristocracy and his mother Sigrada later became a nun at the convent of Notre-Dame in Soissons. After an education at the royal court of Chlothar II, Leodegar was placed under the care of his uncle Desiderius (Dido), bishop of Poitiers, who ordained him and made him archdeacon. In the 650s he was appointed abbot of the monastery of Saint-Maixent in Poitou, where he promoted regular discipline.

In 663 Queen Balthild, then acting as regent, had him consecrated bishop of Autun. As bishop he sought to restore order in a diocese damaged by civil strife: he repaired churches, enforced clerical discipline, and held a synod at Autun whose surviving canons address simony, the moral life of the clergy, and the imposition of a common monastic rule, often identified with the Rule of Saint Benedict, on houses in the diocese. His reputation for reform and his aristocratic connections made him a central figure in Burgundian politics.

The last decade of his life was dominated by the struggle against Ebroin, the Neustrian mayor of the palace. Leodegar supported the Austrasian king Childeric II when that monarch briefly ruled a united Frankish realm, and he used his influence to restrain Ebroin, who was confined for a time at Luxeuil. After Childeric II was assassinated in 675, Ebroin escaped, reasserted control over Neustria, and moved against his former opponents. Leodegar’s brother Warin (Gerinus), a count, was put to death. Leodegar himself was seized, accused of complicity in the king’s murder, and subjected to ritual mutilation: his eyes were put out and his tongue and lips were cut. He was held in captivity, including a period at the monastery of Fécamp, yet near-contemporary passions claim that he continued to speak and to exhort the faithful.

After a further condemnation arranged by Ebroin, Leodegar was taken to Sarcing in the Artois and beheaded, an event dated by most modern historians to 679, though some older authorities give 678. He was at once regarded as a martyr. His body, first buried near the place of execution, was later translated to Saint-Maixent; relics were subsequently distributed to Autun, to Murbach Abbey in Alsace, and to Lucerne, where the collegiate church of Saint Leodegar became a principal shrine. His feast is kept on 2 October. Because of the blinding he endured, he has long been invoked against blindness and diseases of the eyes; he is also honoured as a patron of millers and of the city of Lucerne. The principal narrative sources are the Passions of Leodegar, composed within a generation of his death, and notices in the continuations of the Chronicle of Fredegar; these texts, while hagiographical and politically engaged, remain the basis for reconstructing his life.
