Biography

Short Description

Léon Gustave Dehon was born on 14 March 1843 in La Capelle, in the Thiérache district of the Aisne department in northern France. His father, Alexandre-Jules Dehon, was a prosperous landowner who intended his son for a legal or public career; his mother, Stéphanie Vandelet, was a devout Catholic who shaped his early religious life. After schooling at La Capelle and at the Collège Notre-Dame in Hazebrouck, he studied law in Paris and obtained a doctorate in civil law. A journey to Rome and a deepening sense of vocation led him to abandon secular prospects. He entered the French Seminary in Rome, studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Soissons on 19 December 1868. He also completed doctorates in philosophy and theology before returning to France.

Assigned as a curate in the industrial city of Saint-Quentin in Picardy, Dehon encountered the social consequences of nineteenth-century industrialization and the estrangement of many workers from the Church. He became an early French exponent of social Catholicism, organizing workers’ circles, promoting Catholic social teaching, and arguing that the Church must address the conditions of modern labor. In 1878 he founded at Saint-Quentin a community of priests dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, uniting a spirituality of love and reparation with an apostolate among workers and in education and parish life. The Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Congregatio Sacerdotum a Sacro Corde Iesu, S.C.J.), later known as the Dehonians, received diocesan approval and, after interruptions caused in part by French anti-clerical legislation, pontifical recognition. Dehon served as its first superior general and guided its expansion beyond France.

He was a prolific writer. His published works include treatises and meditations on devotion to the Sacred Heart, the priesthood, and the spiritual life, as well as essays on social questions and a lengthy personal diary. He took part in Catholic congresses and corresponded with other figures of the social Catholic movement in France and elsewhere. In later years he spent much time in Rome and on journeys in the service of the congregation. He died in Brussels on 12 August 1925. His remains were later transferred to Saint-Quentin.

The cause for his beatification was introduced after his death. Pope John Paul II declared him Venerable in 1997, recognizing the heroic character of his virtues. A beatification scheduled for 2005 was postponed after historians and Jewish organizations called attention to passages in Dehon’s writings that repeated antisemitic stereotypes then current in some Catholic circles. The Holy See has not proceeded to beatification, and he remains Venerable. The congregation he founded continues to combine Sacred Heart spirituality with social and missionary work in many countries.
