Biography

Léon-Ignace Mangin was a French Jesuit priest and missionary martyred in northern China during the Boxer Rebellion. He was born on 30 July 1857 at Vernusse, in the Allier department of central France. He entered the Society of Jesus, completed Jesuit formation, and was ordained a priest. In 1882 he was sent to the China mission and assigned to the Jesuit apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, corresponding to parts of present-day Hebei province, where he remained for the rest of his life.

In the mission field Mangin served rural Catholic communities that had grown through earlier Jesuit work. His ministry was that of a missionary pastor: celebrating the sacraments, instructing catechumens and converts, and supporting Chinese catechists and local congregations, including consecrated virgins who assisted the mission. By 1900 he was working in the district around Jingxian, where several villages had substantial Christian populations living amid a largely non-Christian countryside.

In the summer of 1900 the Boxer movement, together with elements of the imperial army, launched widespread attacks on Christians and foreigners in northern China. As the violence approached, Catholics from surrounding villages took refuge at the church compound of Zhujiahe (also known as Tchou-kia-ho). Father Mangin and his fellow Jesuit Paul Denn gathered a large number of the faithful there. The compound was besieged for days, and Chinese Catholic defenders resisted successive assaults.

On 20 July 1900 the attackers set fire to the church. Mangin was killed in the destruction of the building, together with Father Denn and a very large number of Chinese Catholics—men, women, and children—who had taken shelter there. The massacre at Zhujiahe was one of the gravest single episodes of Christian killing during the Boxer Rebellion.

Pope Pius XII beatified Mangin on 17 April 1955 among a group of martyrs of China. Pope John Paul II canonized him on 1 October 2000 as one of the 120 Martyr Saints of China (Augustine Zhao Rong and companions). The Catholic Church commemorates these martyrs collectively on 9 July.
