Biography

Short Description

Saint Leonard of Noblac, also known as Leonard of Limoges, is a Frankish saint of the sixth century whose life is known almost entirely from later legend rather than from contemporary record. No sixth-century chronicle or letter mentions him by name. The principal narrative is a Latin vita composed in the eleventh century, when a pilgrimage church already stood at Noblac in the Limousin. According to that tradition, Leonard was a Frankish nobleman at the court of King Clovis I. He received baptism from Saint Remigius of Reims, the bishop who baptized the king, and thereafter declined a bishopric that Remigius is said to have offered him, choosing instead a life of prayer, monastic discipline, and intercession for those in bondage.

The legend relates that Leonard entered the monastery of Micy, near Orléans, under Abbot Maximin (Mesmin). After a period in community he withdrew as a hermit into the forest of Pauvain in the Limousin. There the king granted him land on which he built an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary; the site grew into the monastery of Noblac, at the place now called Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat in the Haute-Vienne. Leonard’s characteristic miracles concerned the liberation of prisoners. Captives who invoked him were said to have their chains struck off, and many of the freed brought their fetters to his oratory as votive offerings. He was also invoked by women in dangerous childbirth. These stories, whatever their historical kernel, explain the later iconography in which he appears as an abbot holding broken chains, a lock, or a book.

He is traditionally held to have died in 559 and to have been buried at Noblac. From the eleventh century the shrine became an important station on the roads to Santiago de Compostela, and his cult spread through France, the British Isles, Italy, and especially the German-speaking lands. In Bavaria and Austria he was honoured as a protector of horses and cattle as well as of prisoners; rural mounted processions known as Leonhardiritt, in which horses are blessed, remain associated with his name. Countless churches, chapels, and villages were dedicated to him. His feast is kept on 6 November. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; veneration grew from local cult and liturgical commemoration.

Because the written Life is late, conventional, and designed in part to explain an already flourishing pilgrimage, modern historians treat the biographical details with caution. Some have doubted whether a distinct sixth-century founder can be recovered behind the legend. What is historically certain is the strength of the medieval cult: by the High Middle Ages Saint Leonard was among the most popular saints of Western Christendom, invoked by those in chains, by women in labour, and by communities dependent on livestock. That devotion, rather than any recoverable court career, is the firmest fact of his dossier.
