Biography

Short Description

Leonardo Pérez Larios was a Mexican Catholic layman martyred during the religious persecution that accompanied the Cristero War in west-central Mexico. He was born in 1883 in Lagos de Moreno, in the state of Jalisco. Surviving accounts of his early life are sparse, as is common for lay victims of that conflict whose public memory was shaped mainly by the circumstances of their deaths. He married and had children, and as an adult he belonged to the network of Catholic lay associations that were especially strong in Jalisco, among them the Mexican Catholic Youth Association and the Knights of Columbus. Those organizations combined catechesis, charity, and a public defense of the Church’s liberty at a time when the post-revolutionary Mexican state was tightening legal and police control over religious life.

The presidency of Plutarco Elías Calles in the mid-1920s brought a sharp intensification of anticlerical measures: constraints on public worship, pressure on the clergy, and the pursuit of priests who continued to minister in secret after many bishops had been exiled or forced into hiding. Jalisco became one of the principal theatres both of Catholic resistance and of the popular rising known as the Cristiada. In that setting Pérez Larios’s role was that of a committed layman rather than a combatant leader. In the spring of 1927 he was in the company of two priests engaged in clandestine ministry: José Trinidad Rangel Montaño, a Mexican diocesan priest, and Andrés Solá Molist, a Claretian missionary born in Catalonia. Lay escorts and hosts of this kind were a regular feature of underground pastoral work; they exposed civilians to the same lethal risk that the clergy faced if captured.

Government forces seized the three men and took them to the ranch of San Joaquín, in the municipality of Encarnación de Díaz, Jalisco. There, on 25 April 1927, they were executed. Pérez Larios was in his mid-forties. Catholic memory of the episode presents him as having refused to abandon the priests he accompanied or to deny his faith. His death belongs to the large cluster of clerical and lay killings in Jalisco and neighboring states between 1926 and 1929, a period in which both guerrilla warfare and targeted executions of religious personnel and Catholic activists were frequent. Independent archival detail about his last hours is limited; the core facts of capture, place, companions, and date rest on the documentation assembled for the later beatification process and on local ecclesiastical tradition.

The cause of Pérez Larios was advanced together with those of Rangel and Solá Molist, and in connection with a wider group of Mexican martyrs of the same persecution. On 20 November 2005 he was beatified in Guadalajara during a ceremony presided over by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting in the name of Pope Benedict XVI. The same rite included Anacleto González Flores and several companions as well as José Sánchez del Río. Pérez Larios has not been canonized and is venerated as Blessed Leonardo Pérez Larios. His liturgical memory is associated with 25 April, the date of the three companions’ death. Devotion to him remains strongest in Jalisco and among the Knights of Columbus, who commemorate him as a married lay member killed for the faith during the Mexican persecution of the 1920s.
