Biography

Short Description

Leonid Ivanovich Feodorov was born on 4 November 1879 in Saint Petersburg, then the capital of the Russian Empire, and was raised in the Russian Orthodox Church. He received a classical gymnasium education in the city and later studied at the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy, where the history of the churches and the problem of Christian disunity came to occupy him. In 1902 he left Russia, was received into the Catholic Church, and prepared for the priesthood in Italy, including at Anagni and in Rome. His formation was directed toward the Byzantine rite rather than the Latin rite, in keeping with hopes then shared in Rome and in Lviv that a Russian community of the Eastern rite might serve reunion between Catholicism and Orthodoxy.

He was ordained a priest of the Byzantine rite in 1911 and entered the Studite monastic community associated with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. During the First World War the Tsarist authorities arrested him and sent him into internal exile in Siberia. The February Revolution of 1917 brought his release. In that year Sheptytsky appointed him Exarch of the Russian Greek Catholic Church, a small jurisdiction meant to care for Russian Catholics of the Byzantine rite and to further the cause of unity. Pope Benedict XV later confirmed the appointment. Feodorov’s ministry in Petrograd combined ordinary pastoral care of a tiny flock with an ecumenical vision formed before the war, at a moment when the imperial order had collapsed and the future of every church in Russia was uncertain.

Bolshevik rule quickly made organized Catholic life nearly impossible. Churches were closed or confiscated, clergy were watched and arrested, and regular contact with Rome was cut off. Feodorov continued to serve as best he could until 1923, when he was arrested and tried in Moscow together with other Catholic leaders, including Archbishop Jan Cieplak, in a public proceeding intended to brand the Catholic clergy as enemies of the state. He received a long prison sentence and was held in successive prisons and camps, including the Solovetsky camp on the White Sea, where Catholic and Orthodox clergy were confined together. Accounts from fellow prisoners later described him as steadfast and as a spiritual support to those around him.

After release from camp he lived under police supervision in internal exile in the provinces. He died on 7 March 1935 in Kirov (formerly Vyatka) in the Soviet Union. On 27 June 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified him in Lviv among Eastern Catholic martyrs who had suffered under Soviet persecution. He is venerated as Blessed Leonid Feodorov; his individual feast is 7 March. He was neither pope nor patriarch, but he remains the central figure of the short-lived Russian Catholic exarchate of the early twentieth century and a principal witness to the suppression of Eastern Catholicism in the Soviet state.
