Biography

Short Description

Leopold Mandić was born Bogdan Ivan Mandić on 12 May 1866 in Herceg Novi, then known as Castelnuovo, a town on the Bay of Kotor in the Kingdom of Dalmatia, a crown land of the Austrian Empire. He belonged to a large Croatian family of modest means, originally connected with the Bosnian hinterland, and is commonly described in the sources as the twelfth of sixteen children. Physical frailty marked him from childhood: he remained of unusually small stature, spoke with a stammer, and suffered chronic ailments that never left him. In adolescence he entered the Capuchin Franciscans, taking the religious name Leopold, and pursued his formation in the Venetian province of the order, including studies connected with the seminary at Udine.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1890. Mandić long hoped to work as a missionary among Eastern Christians in his native region and to labor for the reunion of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, a desire shaped by his Dalmatian origin and by the Capuchin missionary tradition. His superiors judged his health too fragile for that apostolate and assigned him instead to houses in northern Italy. After several such postings he was sent in 1909 to the Capuchin friary in Padua, which became his home for the rest of his life apart from a wartime interruption. During the First World War, as a subject of Austria-Hungary living in Italy, he was interned as an enemy alien in southern Italy before being permitted to return to Padua.

In Padua he devoted himself almost entirely to the ministry of confession. For decades he spent the greater part of each day, often many consecutive hours, in the confessional, receiving penitents of every condition. Those who knew him described patience, an emphasis on divine mercy, and a reputation for spiritual insight; later testimonies spoke of conversions, interior healing, and, in some cases, physical cures, and he was widely reputed to possess extraordinary gifts of counsel. He accepted his own infirmities as a share in the Cross and offered his hidden work for the unity of Christians and the conversion of sinners, remaining obedient to a life quite different from the Eastern mission he had once desired.

Mandić died in Padua on 30 July 1942 of cancer of the esophagus. Devotion to him spread after his death, strengthened by reports that his cell and confessional survived later wartime bombardment of the friary. Pope Paul VI beatified him on 2 May 1976, and Pope John Paul II canonized him on 16 October 1983. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 12 May. He is remembered as a model of the ministry of reconciliation and is invoked especially for Christian unity and by those who suffer from cancer. His remains are venerated in the Capuchin sanctuary dedicated to him in Padua.
