Biography

Short Description

Ælfheah (also known as Alphege, Elphege, or Godwine) was an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk, Bishop of Winchester, and Archbishop of Canterbury, remembered as a martyr killed by a Danish army in 1012. He was born in England in the mid-tenth century, traditionally said to have come from a noble family, though neither an exact birth year nor a securely documented birthplace survives in contemporary sources. Early in life he entered the monastery at Deerhurst in Gloucestershire. Seeking a stricter life, he later lived as a hermit near Bath, where disciples gathered around him, and he became abbot of the monastery at Bath. His career belongs to the English Benedictine reform of the tenth century, the movement associated with Dunstan, Æthelwold, and Oswald, which sought to restore regular monastic observance and to place monk-bishops in the leading English sees.

In 984 he was consecrated Bishop of Winchester in succession to Saint Æthelwold. As bishop he was known for personal austerity, generous almsgiving, and support for the cult of Saint Swithun, Winchester’s earlier bishop. Near-contemporary writers present him as a reform prelate who combined monastic discipline with care for the poor. In 994, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, he and Ealdorman Æthelweard brought the Norwegian leader Olaf Tryggvason to King Æthelred at Andover, where the king stood sponsor at Olaf’s confirmation and received a promise that Olaf would not return in hostility. After more than twenty years at Winchester, Ælfheah was translated to Canterbury in 1006 as successor to Archbishop Ælfric. In 1007 he travelled to Rome for the pallium, a journey noted in the Chronicle.

His archiepiscopate fell in a period of severe Viking attack during the reign of Æthelred. In the autumn of 1011 a Danish army associated with Thorkell the Tall besieged Canterbury. After several weeks the city was taken, reportedly through treachery involving a cleric named Ælfmaer. The cathedral community was despoiled, many of the inhabitants were killed or enslaved, and the archbishop was carried off as a high-value captive. He was held for some seven months while his captors demanded a large ransom. Ælfheah refused to permit a ransom to be raised from a people already ruined by war and tribute, a refusal later remembered as pastoral solidarity with his flock and as the immediate occasion of his death.

On 19 April 1012, at Greenwich on the Thames, the Danes, described in the sources as drunk, brought him out and pelted him with bones and ox-heads. He was finished off by a blow to the head with an axe; later hagiography names the killer as a man called Thrum, said to have been confirmed by Ælfheah. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the killing in unusual detail and treats him as a martyr. His body was taken to London and buried in St Paul’s Cathedral. In 1023 King Cnut had the remains translated with public ceremony to Canterbury Cathedral, an act of honour to the dead archbishop that also served Cnut’s effort to reconcile Danish rule with the English church. A cult grew at Canterbury and elsewhere.

After the Norman Conquest, Archbishop Lanfranc doubted whether Ælfheah should be venerated as a martyr, arguing that he had not died for refusing to deny the Christian faith but in a quarrel over money. Anselm of Canterbury maintained that death suffered for justice and for his people was true martyrdom. The cult was upheld, and in 1078 Pope Gregory VII is recorded as confirming Ælfheah’s sanctity. His principal feast is 19 April, the day of his death. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury to be put to death, and later devotion associated him especially with Greenwich and with those held in captivity. His shrine at Canterbury remained a pilgrimage site until it was destroyed in the sixteenth-century Reformation.
