Biography

Short Description

Ælfheah the Bald, also known as Alphege the Bald and sometimes numbered Ælfheah I to distinguish him from a later namesake, was a tenth-century English monk and Bishop of Winchester. He is remembered chiefly as a kinsman of Saint Dunstan and as the prelate who ordained both Dunstan and Saint Æthelwold to the priesthood, thereby standing at the beginning of the two most influential monastic careers of the English Benedictine reform. Contemporary sources do not record his parentage, place of birth, or year of birth, and modern historians therefore treat his early life as unknown. He belonged to the generation of West Saxon churchmen who served the royal court in the decades after King Alfred, during the reigns of Æthelstan, Edmund, and Eadred. The epithet the Bald (Old English se Calwa) was already used in the early biographical tradition in order to separate him from Saint Ælfheah of Canterbury, who was Bishop of Winchester from 984 to 1006 and was martyred by the Danes in 1012.

Later medieval writers, notably William of Malmesbury, associated Ælfheah with the monastery of Glastonbury, the house with which Dunstan was so closely identified, although strictly contemporary evidence for that particular affiliation is limited. What is better grounded is his blood relationship to Dunstan. The earliest Life of Dunstan, composed by the anonymous Saxon cleric known as B, presents Ælfheah as a relative who repeatedly urged the young Dunstan to take the monastic habit. Dunstan at first preferred a more secular path at the royal court; according to the same vita he then fell gravely ill and, after his recovery, accepted ordination from Ælfheah. The bishop likewise ordained Æthelwold, afterwards abbot of Abingdon and bishop of Winchester, who became the most rigorous of the tenth-century reformers. In this way Ælfheah’s episcopal household at Winchester formed an early centre from which the monastic revival of the mid-tenth century would later spread, even though Ælfheah himself died before the reform reached its full institutional expression under King Edgar.

Ælfheah succeeded Bishop Byrnstan at Winchester after Byrnstan’s death in 934 and was consecrated in 934 or 935, most probably by Archbishop Wulfhelm of Canterbury. He attests royal diplomas from the mid-930s onward and remained a regular witness at the courts of Æthelstan and his successors through the 940s. Winchester was already one of the principal royal and ecclesiastical centres of the English kingdom, and its bishop ranked among the leading prelates of the realm. Almost nothing survives of Ælfheah’s diocesan legislation, pastoral correspondence, or building work; unlike Dunstan and Æthelwold he left no writings and was not the subject of a contemporary saint’s life devoted to himself. His importance in the historical record is therefore largely relational: he occupies a secure place in the episcopal succession of Winchester and in the early formation of the two chief reformers, while the details of his own administration remain largely irrecoverable.

He died on 12 March 951 and was thereafter honoured as a saint, his feast being observed on the anniversary of his death. The cult was essentially local and associated with Winchester; it belongs to the older pattern of episcopal veneration in which recognition by the local church, rather than a formal papal process, established sanctity. Later martyrologies and liturgical calendars include him among the holy bishops of Winchester. Because so few personal particulars are preserved, a cautious account must emphasize the limits of the evidence: the dates of his episcopate, his identity as a monk and kinsman of Dunstan, the ordinations of Dunstan and Æthelwold, and his death in 951 rest on reasonably firm ground, whereas later elaborations, including precise claims about Glastonbury and unsubstantiated anecdotes, remain conjectural.
